Gaza should be getting new legal advice ASAP.

By all accounts he was incredibly out of his depth in his dealings with the SANFL

Good riddance to him/

I hope it wasnt him that started the Go Fund Me page, otherwise he's just screwed the club of even more money.

His whole strategy was a winner.

Claimed publicly to have known all about it, denied everything in the meetings with the SANFL, then blamed everyone else when it all came to light

What a sorry sordid mess the Gaza situation is - and to think while all this was going on they are going backwards.

Obviously this is the talk of the town even up here in the country.

From all the chats i've had/heard the overiding sentiment regarding punishment would be:

-Gaza as a club do deserve some on-field whack either being dropped to div 7 or potentially staying in their current division but having significant restrictions on their recruiting points. Things like zero points for multiple years or zero points in year one and incrementaly increasing having being suggested.

-Most I've spoken to agree that a punishment so harsh that the club folds is really not in the best interest of the Gaza participants at all levels and the wider community.

-If possible the individuals found guilty (presidents, coaches, administration) should face significant punishments mainly revolving around not being able to hold any positions of administration or coaching at any level of football in the state for a period of time.

-Most would agree the players who took the coin should also face a whack, i agree that should be the case in a perfect world but concede the only way associations will catch clubs is if players arent punished too harshly.

agreed, the evidence was largely based on those 6 players, so they obviously wouldn’t have spoken up if they were facing punishment themselves.

As we all know, the club punishment here is/will be severe due to the pure arrogance of the (former) president in dragging it out so long.

I think it’s too simplistic to just blame the former president, others would have known what was occurring.

Anyone know how they were paid and who actually paid them?
Usually the treasurer would do that.

Sure, no doubt, but I’m talking about how the club managed their dealings with the SANFL after being presented with the allegations … the ex-president managed that disastrous strategy.

Agree and that's why i believe anyone who is found guilty of being involved eg president, coach or even sponsors paying the cash would then be banned from hold formal roles at clubs for a period of time.

I think the general consensus is that yes Gaza f***ed up but for an entire club to have to fold due to the behavior of 3-4-5 people is probably a tad harsh, especially given the climate where volunteers are so hard to come by its not like members of clubs can often be very selective when electing a new committee.

Members could presumably have called an EGM and got rid of him and changed course. Hardly needed to be Nostradamus to see how this was going to turn out.

You're kidding yourself.

The penalty cant be disproportionate because you have the warm and fuzzys about the club. what you're effectively saying is "Hey the more you cheat, the more you get off".

Reality is they systematically broke the rules over a prolonged period of time - not just one or two years. Clubs like Willaston and Jervois copped their whack for their breaches and no one batted an eye lid, saw it as fair.. why coz it wasn't threatening to close the doors like Gaza? Also two clubs that fully complied with the SANFL.

Willaston:A summary of the penalties is as follows
$8,000 fine ($2k suspended)
Loss of 6 premiership points - 2 for 2018 and 4 for 2019.
Loss of three points under the Approved Player Points System (APPS) in both season 2019 and 2020
Two officials banned from holding position for 12 month.

Jervois: A summary of the penalties is as follows:
$26,500 fine ($9,500 of which is suspended)
Limited to a total of four points allocated under the Approved Player Points System (APPS) in both season 2024 and 2025
Loss of 8 premiership points in 2023 and 2024 (four points per year).

Of course it's sad for the true club people and the history of the club - but these officials were appointed, re-elected into positions.. players knew what was happening, officials knew what was happening - and i'd hazard a guess that supporters / members had an inkling.

Books should've been audited annually ahead of the AGM, financials presented at the AGM but no one batted an eye lid or asked questions about the payments? Unless they were off the books which I guess is likely.. but I just struggle to see how over that period of time more people weren't aware and no one tried to stop it.
