fair chance they wont even take another batsman if marsh doesnt recover in time, given henriques is going over there. he would be a decent option to come in at 6 if need be

He's been added to the squad to cover Faulkner who is injured and won't tour SA.

Hughes would have the be the batsmen added to the squad if Marsh doesn't come up.

I'm saying they might not even take a backup if henriques goes, as he is better bat than Faulkner and could fill in if Dolan or watto got injured.

The following is from October last year but still very relevant and a good read:

http://www.theguardian.com/sport/a-straight-bat-cricket-blog/2013/oct/25/shaun-marsh-the-special-one

Perhaps my favorite quote is this one:

"The Shaun Marsh who the selectors believe in doesn't exist. He is a figment of their imagination, a shadow just beyond their grasp, the lost love forever dancing on the edge of their consciousness. He's not real."

That really was a good read,

Good article, particularly as Hughes was once again dropped for marsh in the one dayers. Makes me sad for him

Averages over 44 in every form of the game at state level, including T20.

Just doesn't look as good doing it.

Really hope they pick him when rogers retires

Imho the jury is still out on Hughes at test level but the fact is he continues to go back to the shield and knock out big runs year after year.

It's an absolute joke that blokes like Bailey and Marsh are being picked over him for the number 6 spot.

Have we learnt nothing from the blonde don lol

Reward the blokes who consistently hit runs in the shield ffs

Agreed. He will play a big role in future test teams i have no doubt. In the meantime he will keep hitting hundreds and will break Boof's Sheffield Shield run total record by the end of his career!

Agree the jury is still out at test level, but I can't think of any other shield player that is better qualified

Great article.

Such a shame that first class domestic performances mean absolutely nothing now. Can only imagine what must be going through Hughesy's mind...

I can't believe the selectors have gone backwards twice, once with Marsh and once more with now Moe-he-says Henry-ques.

Both were tried, both failed.

Shows they have no faith in Watson's body and feel they must carry a second all-rounder to cover him. With 3 quicks, a spinner and Watson there's enough real back up with Smith and Clarke if needed. Warner even bowls some tweakers.

Agree we are picking a squad member purely to cover Watson no other reason

I don't mind people who have failed at test level before being re-tried if they have gone back and earnt the recall through shield performances ala Rogers, Smith, Hughes, Warner

enriques is only 26, (turns 27 in a few days) and averages 32 with the bat and 28 with the ball at shield level. only had 6 tests too, so i dont think it is a tried and failed proposition.

happy for him to go, faulkner has jumped ahead of him, that is the only reason he isnt playing more international cricket right now.

people seem to forget that almost all youngsters are dropped at one point in their career.

hayden
langer
clarke
steve waugh
brett lee

could have easily been warne too

I loved that article too - being written well before his latest callup just adds even more to the argument now. The Moneyball undertones to it all appeal to me a lot too.

Another good read along somewhat similar lines is this piece from Ed Smith - how we shouldn't pigeonhole players and have too fixed views on their ability and potential http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/713637.html. So yes, the selectors don't have to forget about Shaun Marsh, but at least wait until he scores some runs in first class cricket first!

Bird passed fit will tour to South Africa as spare bowler.

No word on Marsh yet I really don't want S.A to lose Hughes and think it would be good for him to keep playing in Oz rather than sit in change room as reserve batsman.
