Root is looking ok out there. The pitch is pretty lifeless.

The bowling has been all over the shop.

Watson looks a bit scared of the ball coming to him.

England finishes day one at 7/343

Great century from Root, 134 from 162. But For F**k Sake Haddin, you have to take those catches mate!

Hazlewood 3/70 from 22 overs
Starc 3/84 from 19

Looked like a very nervous and unsettled start by the Aussie bowlers, as mentioned previously the bowling was all over the place but 7 wickets on day one is a decent return. Hopefully we can wrap up their innings quickly tomorrow.

Whilst still think England would have rallied as the pitch looks pretty good. Roots wicket would have meant a sub 300 total.

So FFS Haddin.

I've never been a fan of Haddin. For me, his dropped catch was costly, but that's not what I'm going to concentrate on.
I was concerned about our attack going in - a little bit inexperienced and with Johnno never having been a success in England - and wondered if we'd bowl tight enough to choke the Poms.
Sadly, we fed enough bad balls to them that the pressure, after that burst of three wickets, wasn't maintained. This is where we missed Ryno.
But...it takes us back to that catch, though, doesn't it? 4/44 and the pressure wasn't so much reliant on our bowling but England's mindset.
Root was beautiful to watch, with his agrarian waddle making him look unrushed. Ballance held an end up and did a job - he can be proud of that effort.
A little bit of a comeback late in the day for us but talk, this morning, that honours are even is a little bit too nice to us, for mine.
It's all England at the moment - they've already set us a good target and it's going to see how our bats react once we get in.
They've taken the notion of favouritism away from us and we know we're in for a fight.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

Agreed Dogwatcher. Hadds should have held that catch but those full ones can be tricky. However Boof would be bitterly disappointed in the consistency of the bowling attack. All over the place from ball one. When we did get it right they had no idea how to play us. Root batted well, gave us a few half chances (top edges, LBWs) but luck was on his side. We now have to bat well to stay in the game which I think we will do on an interesting pitch.
Certainly missed Harris! Lyon bowled quite well and tried to build pressure from one end I thought.
If we get our consistency right in the 2nd innings we are a big chance of bowling them out for 200 and stealing this game IMO but a long way to go before we talk about that!

How serious?

And yeah I reckon they are around 70 runs ahead of being honours even. They bat pretty deep. If they get 450+ I think that takes an Australian win out of the equation

Only watched the first session, but thought Clarke made one little mistake. Understand Lyon had probably done what Clarke had bought him on to do, but thought he could have given Lyon one more over when Ballance was on strike as he had only bowled to Cook and Bell in his couple of overs.

He had a fair chunk of ball in his hand. Understandable why he would have thought he caught it.
