Australia has won 49.74% of matches when they win the toss and only 43.32% when they lose the toss...

England 36.56% when winning the toss and 34.76% when they lose...

Pakistan have won 29.55% when winning the toss and 32.34% when they lose...

Hardly a compelling argument to change a rule that has been around since day 1, and Mal using the last two series of Australia vs England is far too small of a sample to say that we need to change a rule based on those results!

Should Australian Rules Football also stop using the toss of the coin? Surely the team that wins the toss would kick with the wind and get an advantage...

Either way, stats say the best team wins more often than not.

ANSWER this question
Is it an advantage to win the toss and bat in Test Cricket ?
YES
or
NO

Did you just completely ignore the actual facts that I posted?

Not at all... You make some valid points. i just think its ridiculous argument.

After we were dismissed cheaply in brisbane in the first test, did you think we were at an advantage? i would say not!!! Best side won!

Also what happens when the captain wins the toss and elects to bowl first on a bowlers paradise, are the batting side at an advantage because the bat first??

i understand your points, but i can't fatham why people wont to change something which has been around since jesus opened the batting...

Also i cant see how when australia play bangladesh and the bangers captain wins the toss and says will bat first folks. I doubt it will make a lick of difference, they'll poo there pants and be out for under 150 :D

My second post, where I disproved my own argument from the first?

The superior teams will beat the inferior teams irrespective of the winner of the toss
Class will almost always prevail when one side is better

When teams of ABOUT equal ability play each other , without doubt MOST times its a small to significant advantage to bat first

BETFAIR
Have a look at the odds of any cricket game at the start of the match
Then have a look at the odds AFTER the toss
Tell me why the side that won the toss and batted shortens in odds ?
I say its because the punters have decreed some advantage

Good discussions on the toss lads
SHOULD have started a new thread on it !
I apologise for thinking I'm always right !

Whats more important is beating England and leading 3-0
Then winning the toss the next 2 tests , bat first and win the series 5-0

Good stats supplied
Thanks for a riveting days discussions so far

Yet again he's making runs when the pressure's off.

Maybe, but atleast he is upping the tempo so we can get the runs quickly and have more time to bowl at England...

He could easily come out and just try to be not out at the end of the session and only put on 30 runs...

Yet again he keeps his average of about 43 + batting top 3 spots for Australia
Not bad for an allrounder

Yes he could be batting sedately like his skipper did in Adelaide recently b4 the impending declaration
But he's playing for the team

Watson has just won his spot for the next couple tests with the 50, just needs to convert the 50 to a 100. Too many times got a 50 and didn't go on and get a 100.

Watson 3*6's in an over off Swann. Hitting him out of the English team, one might think?

Watson 50 off 24 balls this morning.

3/295 leading by 429 now.

Swann 4 overs for 41 this morning.

Great unselfish team batting by Watto
Lets hope Smith follows suit

Watching Watto bashing reminds me of the way Booney played in his day
When he bowled

Both statements made me chuckle here. Comparing Watson to our most important/valuable player by a streak, and then saying he's playing for the team.

Got nothing to do with the ability of Clarke or Watto
I didnt see Clarke bashing like this in Adelaide
You can chuckle , but I deal with facts and what I see
