Bird would have been my pick, when fit and in form is an excellent test bowler. Get the "Bird Man" in form for the return series against the Kiwis.

WA is the new NSW, surprised they haven't picked Beer out of obscurity over Lyon.

I actually rater NCN really highly and think he has all the attributes to make a good test bowler.

BUT

Surely a prerequisite for being selected for the test side is you must have played some form of shield cricket.

What message does it send it out the rest of the shield players.

Who exactly are the test selectors, what say does Boof have in selection if any?

Coulter-Nile coming off a one match ban received in a second XI game. Yep hard to look past him for a test call up

Sounds like the justification for him is that they need an enforcer to replace Starc and he must be the next quickest?

That seems to be the justification in picking Coulter-Nile, that he bowls at 140 km/h or higher. Lehmann was critical of Siddle last year as his pace dropped to between 130 and 135.

Would be a major reason they won't pick Sayers, as he bowls at similar pace to Siddle. Lehmann was quoted as saying you need to be bowling over 140 to play for Australia. Probably why Cummins and Pattinson were pushed up when they were not ready and their bodies could not handle it, just because they bowl fast.

Don't agree with the logic, good batters can handle the pace, it is the bowler who swings the ball both ways that trouble the batters, exactly why Sayers gets so many wickets. Sayers or Bird had to be rewarded for their Shield performances ahead of NCN, that is pretty obvious you would have thought!

Reckon the selectors are also thinking about him batting at no 8. With Johnson retiring and Starc now out injured, the tail end is very exposed.

I have always thought of WA as having had a dream run with test selections for 40 years now. W. Edwards, Valetta, Zoehrer, Hogan, Nicholson, Chris Matthews, Jo Angel and perhaps Brendan Julian and Tom Moody were lucky to play as much test cricket as they did. Even Graeme Wood seemed to be selected a lot more times than he deserved. Now we have the Marsh brothers and Coulter-Nile getting tests.

People talk about NSW players that get gifted their test selection. I can't think of many, if any, that were gifted a spot. Not as much as the Marsh brothers anyway

Hasn't played a shield game this season through injury, I guess carrying a slight injury is reason enough to bring him in, that way he can totally **** it & miss the ODI's & T20's where he's better suited.
Would love to see the Chadd play but probably needs another one or two strong performances in a row, Bird or the dude with the sort of swear name would be the obvious choices IMO.

A first class batting average of 17 is hardly an average to inspire confidence. These days that is more the average of a number 10.

IIRC Lehmann specifically talking about Siddle, not bowlers in general, as obviously Hazelwood is in the team.

Maybe those blokes deserved a look-at, but they seem to get a go whereas not so many from SA do. Gillespie and maybe Cozier are probably the only ones I can think of that maybe were in the side possibly before their age and weight of performance.

Always talk about runs at the Adelaide Oval being discredited, never any talk though of wickets at the Adelaide Oval being held in higher regard
