I never understood the 'Shane Warne kept Stuart MacGill out of the Test side' stuff. If Zampa was deemed good enough he would be in there.

Well he did. Cos he was better

Yes you need to be good enough but you also need to be better than someone else who can play that role in the side. Players at this level are picked to play a specific role and it's about the team balance needed for the opposition and the conditions. That's why Warney and MacGill played in the same team sometimes but not often.

The point I was making that Warne never kept MacGill out of the side because he was deemed not good enough to be picked over Warne or not good enough to be picked in the same side regularly. The SACA selectors obviously thought the same way in regards to Zampa vs Botha. If they're deemed good enough they will be picked.

But Warne wasn't imported from another country and keeping a fellow Australian out.
There's where the debate is.

That makes no sense at all.
Do you pick two wicket keepers if they are both good enough? Or 5 opening batsmen? Of course you don't.

Who says you only have to pick one spinner? This is yet another example of the stodginess of cricket people not being able to think outside the square.

I see MacDonald as the one clogging up a spot on our list more so than Botha

I don't think Botha is keeping Zampa out of the side unfairly, he is preventing Zampa from being gifted a game because we have no one else. Head to head, Botha is a much better spin bowler than Zampa is.

I disagree, if McDonald could bowl I would have him well before Botha. Could then play 3 quicks, Zampa & McDonald as the 5th bowler.

The fact he can't bowl & gets/has got a game is the issue atm.
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

If they want a quality spinner, then they should have given the other McDonald a contract

Zampa is averaging 45 in 1st class cricket, has had plenty of chances to secure his own spot
