Its a 5 test series and, to loosely quote Mr Keating, we wanna do em slowly.
Keep bowlers fit and work them over all 5 tests.

Will go into 5 days IMO, had em down and out and have now given them all the confidence in the world.

Ball may well continue to dart around more than a dodgem car for a few over this afternoon, Aussies need to get around another 150 to feel safer one thinks

They don't need that many. Another 100 will do it. This mob have faced bugger all under lights in this match. That will happen tonight.

Not sure if it’s been mentioned but re Australia not enforcing the follow on, we have two strike bowlers who have recently come back from extensive injury lay-offs. It was too bigger risk to take, Starc & Cummins had to be managed - can you imagine the uproar if we did put the poms back in & one of them broke down again?
As REB said, Australia only need another 100 and they’ll still have over a day to take ten wickets, including two goes (if needed) under lights - with refreshed bowlers.

I'd be saying fair's fair. Smart teams milk the clock at this time.
England didn't towards the end of one session earlier in the match and I thought they were stupid allowing themselves to face one more over.

Cardiff 2009 when Panesar and Anderson milked the clock with Glove changes and injuries when we needed one more wicket to win that test.

Australia pushing for victory at Trent Bridge in 2013 (admittedly one wicket left but requiring less than 20 and the lunch break approaches and Broad stops undoes his laces and reties his boot laces making sure it's the last over. Was there whinging from our sides? Yep.

My point? Both teams do it when it suits them play on. Nothing to see here.

Poms bowled 149 overs, we bowled 76 with Hazlewood and Cummins bowling 16 overs, you can't seriously say they needed a rest, we would have them 4/50 now and test match over. Stupid decision to bat again.

If all 3 pace bowlers had bowled 30+ overs like England I could understand the decision.

I think we would have enforced the follow on had Woakes & Overton not put on the partnership they did. We were always going to bat again once those two started to make some runs. As others have said, i think we may have enough now, but will make another 100 today and declare and hopefully knock them over tonight

Agreed. There was under 30 overs left in the days play as well, if there was 40 or more I'd understand the thoughts on the quicks but with only 28 over to stumps they surely could have pulled another 4 or 5 over spell out of themselves with a shiny pick aggart under lights.

Even if we had closed out the last few overs with Lyon and Smith the Poms would have been in dead bat mode by then. Should have sent them straight back out there IMO.

However, moot point as we'll get another 50-80 and be 350+/- in front and that'll be enough runs and we'll have around 5 sessions to bowl them out.
PAFC. Forever.

I disagree. Had the Poms been rolled earlier without that partnership, would've given the aussies the best part of 50 overs to bat and in better conditions before the night session. New ball would've been worn by the time the conditions changed. Smith would've been more inclined to bat again and utilise those conditions and look to build a 400+ lead by stumps.

It gets to a point, doesn't it, where you have to question it. Smith occasionally gets caught up too.
During the contest, I reckon it's okay. Walking off the field, I reckon it's petty.
Root's a very naive captain and him getting involved in that stuff reflects where the English have been in this series so far - distracted.
I almost feel like he's trying to show Anderson and Broad he's a big boy.
