India's record-breaking batsman Sachin Tendulkar announced on Thursday that he would retire after playing his 200th cricket Test match next month.

"It's been a huge honour to have represented my country and played all over the world," Tendulkar, the highest run-scorer in the history of Test cricket, said in a statement.

"I look forward to playing my 200th Test Match on home soil, as I call it a day."

India is to play a two-Test series against the West Indies next month which would enable Tendulkar, who has already made 198 appearances, to become the first player to reach the 200 landmark.

What a batsman, what a cricketer and what a man. The best batsman I'll see in my lifetime, that's for sure.

Scary to think the Don would of been pushing 30,000 runs if he had the chance to play 200 tests.
When you think of how great Tendulkar has been its amazing to think there was someone twice as good

Top 3 in my all time fav list.

Had the absolute privelidge of getting to bowl to him and spend some time with him in an Adelaide net session after meeting him in the Myers food court and being given the invite.

I claim i almost found his edge with my off break but realisitcally it came straight off the middle and would have hit the cover boundary within seconds.

Throw in that when Bradman played the wickets were about 50% worse on a regular basis compared to the roads that Tendulkar has been gifted with.
Then chuck up on top of that Tendulkar would have played 70% of his cricket against the worse three bowling nations.
Yeh he could certainly bat but I'm not sad to see him go.
He appears to be arrogant and self indulgent.

Great player, that's for sure. You can only make runs against the team bowling to you.

I feel that he probably played for 2-3 years too long though, and I think it's a little self-indulgent to retire mid-series, unless you know you're getting the tap on the shoulder.

His lying to the tribunal during the Symonds-Singh case has changed a lot of people's thoughts of him as a person. As a cricketer though, he is in the top handful in the history of the game.

One of the best. A pleasure to watch. Spoilt to have Tendulkar and Lara out here every few years facing up to Warne, McGrath and co. Different styles, one stylish and compact, the other stylish and flamboyant, both as effective. It is mind blowing to think that he has scored over 100 international centuries, has been playing since I turned 8, averaging over 50, over 34,000 international runs, the list goes on. One of the greats of all time and probably the greatest career of all time.

It's a sad moment to think that after all these years, wont get the opportunity to watch him bat in matches again.. suddenly i feel so much older - how long until i'm telling young whipper snappers "back in my day.. Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting.." :(

Hardly a glowing reference for Sachin for his role in the 'Monkeygate' affair. Plenty of Australian players involved in that series livid with CA management for instructing them to just drop the issue.

Playing his last innings, currently 22 no late on Day 1 BCCI will be hoping he gets through to stumps

Full house, crowd cheer every run as though they just won a Test Match

He has played with 110 Indians and against 492 from other countries in Test cricket
