Alex Doolan
Has recently been compared to Mark Waugh in the press
From what I've seen , he has not got what it takes to be a successful long term Test cricketer

I'd love to mention Shaun Marsh but he's already failed and under performed for over 10 years.

He's not looking too bad ATM.
Could replace the current test No.3 no issue.
Warner comes back into 50/50 side and he bats 3 there as well.
Oooo rooo Watto.

Umpire Simon Fry, he likes giving players out LBW when the ball is going to miss the stumps.

Will Josh struggle in Domestic cricket ?
If so, how will he go in
Sheffield Shield
One Dayers
20/20
He is young enough , and good enough , to be a very good bowler for NSW in all forms , from here on

Cant see him playing Test Cricket in his current form
Would need to improve a fair bit

Has the potential to play more ODI games
Has played 2 ODI games
1/41[7] v England 2010 as a 19 year old
0/6[2] in a rain interrupted game in England 2013

ODI
Replacing Watson in the one day team would be like replacing Clarke in the Test team
If anyone is not satisfied with Watson's ODI career , then they are extremely hard to please

TESTS
Watson
As an allrounder he does his job , as the 5th bowler makes life easier for the front line bowlers
Averages about 40 + batting top 3 which is pass mark , but should have done better
I think he worries to much about his technique
Looks like he needs to work out that facing a bowling machine is different to facing International bowlers
Too valuable in the current Test set up to be replaced by Marsh , unless Marsh wakes up tomorrow and can average 30 with the ball in Test cricket

Shaun Marsh
Deserves to be in the ODI team
But he is too hit or miss at SS and Test level
I suppose if South Africa had no slips and gullys he might make some runs against them

And one more thing about Watson and Marsh
DONT play em in the same team , could be down to 9 fit players by the end of a Test match !

Steven Smith. Just not up to standard, and will be found out very soon.

If he faced his own bowling consistently he would be a Blonde Don

Sorry WHUFC
I'm with TSG on this one , I can see East Coast Smith being found out within 18 months

ECS
3 tons @ a 36.40 average is better than I thought he was capable of
17 matches played , needs to start improving that average
I reckon he wont get past 30 tests

Agree the 36 average needs to go up but I think as a general observation without any stats to back it up that test scores are now alot lower than we were seeing in the 2000,s.

Even the clear number one team in the world has a top 6 bat only averaging 32

An average of 40 these days seems to be a good average where only the real elite blokes tend to average around the 45-50 mark

I also think alot of our batting order will be under the pump big time in South Africa (Warner, Watson, Smith, Haddin) but in saying that alot of people at the start of this ashes series would have had the English attack as the best in the world over the Saffies especially because they had a world class spinner

Whats going to happen if Clarke gets injured in South Africa ?
Imagine this batting line up
ROGERS
WARNER
WATSON
S MARSH
DOOLAN
SMITH

The only player that looks like being in the team by 2016 is David Warner
He might make more 100's than the rest of the others combined from here on
If David Warner is the best batsman after Clarke, then the Australian bowlers are going to have be exceptional

I understand the desire to replace Watson with someone better, but until we have someone who can average 45+ to bring in he should hold his spot. No point bringing in a guy to make the same runs who can't bowl.

I like the way Smith has made important runs. Too many batsmen make a career of batting 5 or 6 and taking toll of some worn out bowlers but fail when the side is 4/FA. His problem so far has been it's either big or nothing. Needs to find a way to get to 20 more often.

So people on here can criticize him like Watto for not going on with it?

Don't know. Don't rate him.

Wasn't that the point of the thread.

Matty Wade - I tipped him a few years ago to play for Australia

he has made a test ton and once Haddin retires he will be back in the test team

future ODI skipper
