Cricket in the 70s: The Chappell Era

Postby Magpiespower » Sat Dec 17, 2005 7:39 pm

ABC are repeating this over the next few weeks.

Today's first hour was a bit dry - planting the seeds of discontent leading to World Series Cricket.

But next week it should heat up - should have my favourite moment when Ian Chappell has the meeting with Sir Don.

Hmmm...some questionable selections there, REB.

Lawry? Was shot in the handful of tests he played in the 70s. Stackpole fared much better - shades Rick McCosker for mine.

Hogg? Burst on the scene but Maxie was a mainstay of that great Australian side and has to be picked.

Border at number 4? In the team of the 80s maybe but not in the 70s. Not when Gregory Stephen Chappell is available.

Number 6 is up for grabs but I lean towards the underrated Ross Edwards over AB.

Also, Hoggy and AB get points taken off for the 'freebie' caps they won because of WSC...

Ian Redpath
Keith Stackpole
Ian Chappell
Greg Chappell
Doug Walters
Ross Edwards
Rod Marsh
Ashley Mallett
Max Walker
Dennis Lillee
Jeff Thomson
12th Gary Gilmour

Good call. Still have AB ahead of Edwards though.

Yeah probably - finished off the 70s in great style on that tour of Pakistan.

But I'm a bit partial towards Chappelli's teams from '72-75.
