I agree Amatuers would most likely be very keen. The timing of the USPGA is right around then (Olympics early August) as well, so that will surely have an impact.

Seems Adam Scott has a similar opinion to us......

They could have the Olympic Golf Tournament as something the amateurs aspire to before launching a Professional career. As it sits at the moment all you have is another PGA tour Event but this time only the top 3 get paid with a medal. The rest get SFA

The Australian Olympic Team (Rio 2016) will announce the flag bearer for the opening ceremony in Melbourne tomorrow.

From SMH Website.

Dual gold medallist Anna Meares is likely to be heading to her final Olympics in Rio next month carrying Australia's flag.

Meares is the favourite to be named in Melbourne on Wednesday as Australia's flag bearer for the August 5 opening ceremony at her fourth Olympics.

The cycling great tops a list of candidates including hockey gold medallist Jamie Dwyer, world record swimmer Cate Campbell, Olympic champion walker Jared Tallent and rower Kim Brennan.

In a break from tradition, chef de mission Kitty Chiller will name the team leader a month out from the opening ceremony rather than the day before to eliminate distractions in the build up and give the athlete more time to appreciate the role.

"I really wanted the athlete to be able to savour the experience and enjoy it with Australia and get all the accolades and attention the position deserves," Chiller said.

"And it enables them to establish themselves as the leader of the team."

Already respected as a leader, Meares carried the flag at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014 and comes to Rio as the defending sprint champion, 12 years after winning her first Olympic gold in the 500m time trial in Athens.

She overcame a broken neck to claim silver in the sprint in Beijing in 2008 and then won gold in London in 2012, in addition to her 11 world titles.

Campbell, who broke the nine-year-old world record for the 100m freestyle last weekend and is a strong favourite to win gold in Rio, has said she would love to see Meares carry the flag.

But she's no guarantee to even march at the opening ceremony as she competes the following day, while Dwyer is also playing on the first day of the Games.

The world hockey player of the year three times, Dwyer is going to his fourth Olympics chasing his second gold after the triumph in Athens in 2004 and disappointing bronzes in Beijing and London.

Following Sally Pearson's withdrawal to injury, 50km walker Tallent will be Australia's only defending athletics gold medallist in Rio, while Brennan who won silver and bronze in London is favoured to win the single scull in Rio.

Less than a month to go now. Another 3 sports previewed..

TENNIS

Here’s hoping the TV interest generated at Rio 2016, will give this little known sport a much needed shot in the arm. Who knows, it may even become popular.

I can’t help thinking the IOC have missed an opportunity with Tennis.

Imagine if they made it a masters event, strictly for the over 50’s. You can’t tell me there wouldn’t be more interest in the veterans – Borg, McInroe, Connors, LeConte & Becker going at it in slow motion, than the current bunch of flogs.

From an Aussie perspective we could wheel out Newc, Roachy and the Woodies in the double. Interest in the womens game would also peak. That’s if they only allow Steffi Graf & Anna Kournikova to play…no one else…..ok Maria Sharapova in a 3 way. Add your own honey. Game, set, match.

The Olympic tournament features men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. Standard Tournament fare.

Leading the Australian hopes will be World no.16 Samantha Stosur, who will be playing at a record fourth Games for an Australian female player.
Joining Stosur in the 64-strong singles draw and partnering her in the doubles is 22-year-old Daria Gavrilova. The Russian-born tennis player and world no.56 became an Australian citizen last year, despite her love of AFL club Carlton.

In the men’s side exciting young gun Thanasi Kokkinakis will make his long awaited return from injury at the Olympic Games. With an injury protected world ranking of no.81 the 20-year-old has been pursuing a comeback timed to make his Olympic debut. He’ll be joined in the men’s singles by world no.67 John Millman.

I expect the normal crew – Djokovic, Federer & Nadal in the mens. The Williams Brothers along with a few obscure Europeans to be battling out the medals in the womens side.

Don’t hold your breath for Aussie medalists here.

TRIATHALON

Swim, ride, run. Give it a crack when you get a moment, it’s bloody hard. Especially when you get off the bike & go for a jog. Jellylegs, just like Collingwood in September….. err, no sorry July. Let’s face it, it’s been a long time since the ‘pies played any footy in September.

Olympic athletes compete on a course consisting of a 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run. On the mens side of things there are a couple of Spainards at the top of the world rankings, along with Brits (Twins) Alistair & Jonathon Brownlow.

A quick look at the womens current world rankings lists Bermudas Fiona Duffy as #1. A few Poms, and Kiwi’s in the top 5. From an Aussie perspective Charlotte McShane & Ashleigh Gentle are our best ranked competitors. Veteran Emma Moffat however may have the experience to claim a medal in Rio.

Some medal potential here for Australia, particularly from the women, as the Aussies have medalled at every Olympics in Triathlon since its inception in Sydney 2000.

VOLLEYBALL (TRADITIONAL) & VOLLEYBALL (BEACH)

Now here is a sport for the voyeurs out there. What’s not to like, tall athletic women jumping and diving about in tight shorts.

The Beach variety is even better. Serve, dig, set, spike, block, set, spike….. retrieve your bikini bottoms out of your butt crack. Fabulous stuff.

Apparently the blokes play as well.

Indoor matches are played in the best of five set format. The first four sets are played to 25 points and the fifth set to 15. For all sets a 2 point advantage is required, with no cap.

Indoor matches feature The libero (Tony?) is a specialised defensive player that is only allowed to replace a player in the back row. When they are substituted out of the match they can only be replaced by the person they originally replaced themselves. They are not allowed to complete an attack hit when the ball is above the height of the top of the net and do not serve. A team may only have one libero. When the receiving team wins a rally, it gains a point and the right to serve, and its players rotate one position clockwise.

In the Beach variety - A team can win points whether they are serving or not. The team that wins the point serves for the next point.
A team may only touch the ball three times before it is sent back over the net. These touches must be alternate unless a player blocks a ball at the net – in that circumstance they are then able to take the team’s second of three hits also.

No Australian teams participating in the Indoor game. In the Baywatch version - Womens pair - Louise Bawden and Taliqua Clancy will be in the Green & Gold - G Bangers in Rio.

Some medal hopes for Australia.
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!

Ok cheers Benny, I wasn't aware of that. I tend to go a little "cross-eyed" when watching volleyball. The score becomes irrelevant!

Caught a bit of the Euro Athletics Championships last night while waiting for the Tour De France to come on..... can't really be bothered with the Footy Show much anymore. Anywho, there was a Lithuanian High Jumper that caught the eye. And a few Dutch 200 metre girls went ok as well. ;)

They had the Olympic qualifying on fox a week or two ago. Wasn't bad to flick over to every now and then but didn't hold my attention for the whole game

Beach Volleyball Australia has also qualified a second team for Rio

Nikki’ Laird will make her Olympic debut in Rio with her beach volleyball partner Mariafe Artacho del Solar. The duo defeated the top Vanuatu team in Cairns in a nail biting, rainy grand final 19-17 in the final set to help secure the nation’s second women’s beach volleyball team at Rio 2016.

In Beijing even when the men were playing they had bikini clad "dancing girls" on the side lines so well worth going to even if it is the men playing.

We could have another scandal on its way.......

The banned Russian Athletic Federation submitted 68 applications to the international body for athletes to compete as 'Neutral'

The IAAF rejected 67 of them. They did however approve 25 year old Darya Klishina to compete in the long jump. A quick scan of Google Images sees why the application was successful ;) Outside of Athletics she holds modelling contracts with SkullCandy, Seiko and Nike........

I was watching the European Athletics champs over the weekend and especially long jump... I saw young Darya and Hooley Dooleys amazing..

Though there were an incredible amount of beautiful long jumpers...

Even my 11 year old boy mentioned how good looking they were, and he's still at the stage of Girls = Gross..

Saw it live, coming downhill into a bend on a newly surfaced section of road front wheel just went from under him. It began all the chaos of the stage.

Would need 4 weeks minimum off racing. Bike riders are tough pricks.

Yep I saw it to, horrible feeling when the front wheel just goes from underneath you. Old saying, you're not a bike rider until you've broken a collarbone. Not sure if he finished the stage, wouldn't be surprised if he did.... with a busted shoulder. Puts the bloody soccer players into perspective, with their carry on whenever someone breathes on them.

The last 3 sports.

WATER POLO

If only they were on horse back, it would bring out the mudlarks at any rate.

Water polo is the oldest Olympic team sport having been contested continuously at every modern Olympic Games since Paris 1900.
Women’s water polo made its debut in Sydney 2000. Much of the credit for its inclusion on the Olympic program can be credited to lobbying led by Australia, the United States, Canada and Holland. The Aussie girls went on to claim Gold in Sydney.

A team has seven players and six substitutes. At any time in the game, a player may be substituted.

In the mens game, Hungary, have long been the team to beat, while for the women the Americans are best performed.

Some medal hopes here for the Aussies, in particular the womens team.

WEIGHTLIFTING

Smelling salts, talcum powder and big blokes lifting heavy things, it’s all here. If only the great Darryl Eastlake was still with us to call all the action.
And let’s not forget the ladies, after all who out there is not interested in the women’s snatch?

Sergei Popavaliumandropov & Anna Bollock are set to feature for the Russians. Forget the Russian athletics team, these guys and…. ahem, girls, will be well & truly, enhanced.

The competition is divided into the snatch, clean & jerk, along with combined weight totals. Each competitor is allowed one minute between the calling of his or her name and the beginning of the attempt (A warning signal sounds with 30 seconds of allocated time left).

Australia will be represented in the mens by Cameroon born – Simplice Ribouen, and in the womens by Tia Toomey.

Don’t expect any medal here for us.

WRESTLING (FREESTYLE & GRECO)

No it’s not WWF, which is a shame. Mind you I don’t think Hulk Hogan and George “The Animal” Steele (eating turnbuckles) are quite what the IOC had in mind as wrestling has been in every modern Olympics ever held. In fact Wrestling at the Olympics goes way back to the Ancient Greeks (they did invent it after all) in 708BC.

Australia will have 2 wrestlers on duty in Rio. Talgat Ilyasov & Sahit Prizreni, no doubt, household names in wrestling circles. No idea if they are any good, so your guess is as good as mine if they can medal for Australia.

If you’re into sweaty men, in leotards grappling with each other, in a confined space then this is right up your, umm…… alley.

And there you have it. Just 2 weeks or thereabouts to go until it all kicks off in Rio. You’ve been warned!
1961, 1971, 1976, 1978, 1983, 1986, 1988, 1989, 1991, 2008, 2013, 2014, 2015.... And don't you forget it!
