Morphett Vale vs Willunga in curtain raiser to AFL

Postby The Lova » Tue Dec 18, 2007 2:05 pm

Just read in the local messenger that SAFC are in the early stages of planing their AFL preseason match. It mentioned that they were planing to have the emus and demons face of in the curtain raiser.

As a morphies supporter and general follower of the SFL (and GSFL a little) I reckon this is an awesome idea. The emus and demons usually play off in a trial match every year anyway it will be good to see them face off in front of anywhere up to 10,000 people (numbers mentioned in the paper depending on which AFL team plays).

You would think the clubs might take the game a bit more serious than if it was a regular trial match. nothing like playing in front of a big crowd to get the best 21 on the park and playing with some enthusiasm.

Having both won the last 4 in their respective leagues it would be good to see both powerhouses go at it. This would surely bring a fair crowd in itself.

From memory the last few trials between the two have been well faught out and produced a reasonable result.

Dont think any money would need to be put forward to add any incentive....altho i'm sure neither club would knock it back if it was offered.

Sounds like a great idea having the 2 powerhouses of the south playing in a trial in front of a big crowd. Hats off to whoever thought of it.

I think it is a great idea. By the way do you know who won their previous trial games and when they played?

Great move by South would be a great way for two fantastic clubs to play with pride and have the reputation as the best club south. I am sure Hill and Pilmore would find this as an attractive opportunity to play the best sides they can and get a really good hit out before the quest for defending thier flags begins.

Does any one know the proposed game date????

Perhaps Hackham v Goolwa would be a better indication of the strongest comp? Goolwa would smash Hackham. 1 or 2 good sides does not make a good league. It's the depth of quality sides that counts.

How many teams in the GSFL Grape Age? Perhaps Goolwa should play whoever finished 10th.

Yeah im not sure if the "you're only as strong as your weakest link" argument totally works for the SFL vs GSFL debate Grape Ape. Pretty sure Morphies would take the game very seriously, they took on the A1 premiers Boadview in a trial a few years back and took it much more seriously than any other pre-season match! Even if Broadview probably didnt.

They might not have taken it seriously the first year but after Morphies beat them, they were a little bit more prepared the second year.

Reckon that should be a cracker of a game. Would think Morphett Vale would win a tight ganme by 3 or 4 goals?
