GSFL v SFL is the only option (maybe include the RMFL) .. these games helped form part of the southern districts side for the country carnival!! BRING BACK THE LOVELOCK SHIELD! but i guess Gen Y doesn't understand what it's all about ... i'm starting to sound 'old' (or mature as i'd like to call it) but GEN Y expect things to be 'given' to them (yes i know i'm generalising!) ... rather than earn it ... like what's the go with players asking to be paid to play rep footy!! u r kidding!

as for league clubs!! ... well that all changed when footy became a business! unless you have the 'desire' to play SANFL/AFL ... well ... no point wasting your time in the SANFL system! hence (i feel) that a lot of players do come 'home' ... i'm sure it happens as most clubs ... I'm sure SAFC has similar issues with some players attached to Central Districts who will generally fall back to the Barossa League (and surrounding leagues) ... the difference between Centrals and South ... well i'd like to find out so South could take on board what they did/have done!!

South should certainly look to Centrals for inspiration and to see what they do differently.

And I do know there is a big difference between the 2 trainings and game day of SFL and the 4 trainings, game day and recovery session of SANFL. However the thing that seems to be occurring now is players you would consider as moderately successful at SANFL club level are dropping back. That is they are fringe League players, not struggling reserves players!

I also think that they do need to go back to some sort of mini carnival against rival leagues as to the SAAFL. In the Hills they had this problem of powerhouse clubs ignoring the association games WHICH should not be able to occur. They put a suspension rule in place for people who were selected in squad but who choose not to attend, and as a result I hear they had 50 odd blokes out to training & available for the game. Something needs to change - association football showcasing talent within is a fantastic concept and the various leagues have to swallow their pride or pig headedness and get on with finding a solution or a start as this concept is clearly not doing the job. Bring back an association weekend where all picked want to play & (ARE FORCED TO) & also all involved in each league players/officials/supporters want to watch. Anyways good luck this weekend to the SFL guys represent the league well & lets hope the leagues get together over the remainder of this season and get something better in place for the next.

I will be there supporting the lads and more so the Shoe boys that will be playing in their respective squads.

Agree a local club ground would give much better atmosphere as I too find SA to be a sterile place to watch footy.

Lets remember that Association Footy/Lovelock Shield was created and at its peak in the days when SFL was a pseudo country league and there was some regional pride in knocking off Hills, GSFL and the Murray. They were also the days when pre-season started in February and guys were still fresh come June. Most SFL clubs start pre-season in December (some earlier) and with the fixture meaning most the top clubs have played each other already, the players are yearning for a week off. Let alone the club officials who volunteer to assist with the SFL sides when they deserve a weekend off. Brighton joined league in 1997 when Lovelock Shield was supposedly going along swimmingly but there were still many of the top players from all 4 leagues who didn't play. AFL doesn't do rep footy anymore and the SANFL State Games are just a vehicle for AFL recruiters to suss out mature age players who may still be given a chance to play AFL. SFL should can it and name an All-SFL Team of the Year (with a decent selection panel) on Mail Medal Night. This would mean more to players and clubs.

One of the problems is that players seem to want the weekend off to get a break from footy. So lets give them a break. What about doing something that is outside the square. Thursday nights are generally put aside for footy! What about a Thursday night match under lights between the SFL and GSFL? (both leagues have decent venues to cater for night matches), with the best sides they have to offer (eg no U23's, U25's). No one can complain that their weekend is gone and I'd reckon you would get a decent crowd. Individual clubs could go to the association match as a substitue for "normal" training, that should draw 500+ just with players if clubs got behind the concept.

Friday Night might be better than Thursday

Yeah was going to suggest the same thing, Friday night would be much better. But still, either way your going to end up sore which is why a lot of blokes want the weekend off, to rest sore spots and get their bodies right...or is that just the old blokes???

I thought abot the Friday, but at least the Thursday is a night that you have booked in the calendar as a "footy" night for the entire season so you would have less "I have something on" excuses plus it would be a big advantage to draw all non-asociation players.
