I have heard that marion have 29 to pick from to date for both grades, and have until the week before round 1 to advise league on thier intentions for 2011 season.

the week before round 1 doesnt seem fair on the players who have made a commitment to marion for 2011. it doesnt give them much of a chance to find another club. also doesnt seem fair on the rest of the league to be left waiting.
if marion were going to have players they would have them.
anyone who comes in now is just making up numbers for a long season of heavy losses. they will be the next callington with teams lining up to play them to improve there percentage while the media will make everyone else feel sorry they are struggling.
maybe they take the year off and review why everyone has left the club.

If (and I state IF) Marion were to pull themselves from the league at such a late stage it would be a shambles for the other clubs still in the SFL. I am not only saying this because we are currently down to play them twice but more because an organised club would have already pencilled in social events etc on weekends when there are specific opponents or when there is a home/away game. If Marion pulled out then the SFL would have to re-do the entire draw, which at such a late stage would be a nightmare i'd suggest. You can't simply replace Marion with the team having the bye as this does not ensure fairness with away/home games, opponents etc etc.

Well said hb I was actually talking with some friends about the Marion situation the other day as we sat up in their club rooms having a beer.. Top location with great facilities but struggling to get Players. Maybe they needed to listen to the players that have now left to work out what the reasons were for this massive walk out.. rebuilding seems like a very tough job for them now maybe a total clean out is in order to save the club.. Come back in a year with some new ideas, people and someone that will make the club attractive to young footballers..

Absolutely spot on. Clubs have already organised and financially committed to social functions, reunions, bye weeks, etc, and these dates are determined by the draw. If the draw was to change in any way which would cost these clubs money, who does the lawyer send the bill to? The league would be praying Marion stay in, otherwise the 125th year will be in the media for all the wrong reasons.

All the league would have to do is take the team that has the bye, and then take the team that was supposed to play marion...make them play each other...and hey presto...the draw is fixed...its not hard...

PS

Would people be seeing this as such a tragedy if Hackham pulled out? doubt it...

Round 2 Lonsdale v Hackham

Round 3 Marion v Lonsdale, Hackham has the bye, so this becomes Hackham v Lonsdale

And then they'd play again in round 19, and round 20.

Here's hoping HH3 doesnt get a job working for the SFL any time soon.

Aldinga and Hackham have been in this boat before and survived, 29 in February, how is that a club looking at folding? In 2003/04/05 we had 12 at training in Feb and survived. Also remember rumours of Lonsdale struggling 3 or so years back and they made finals that year.

Does'nt matter the club. The SFL are supporting clubs in a 1 divsion comp. that are just surviving. While this is happening it is weakening the whole comp. Unless the SFL bite the bullett and move to 2 divs more clubs will be just surviving or folding

I agree, always wanted 2 div's myself, my point is 29 is enough in Feb cause you get more guys from cricket etc in late March/April, surprised with the talk of folding at Marion is all.

Make it 2 divs. we will start in 2nd div. I think it is the way to go too.
Just get off our backs about juniors, as i know first hand how hard Morphies are working on it.
Under 16's this year & 18,s in the near future.

Happy Valley are now expirencing it. Most 17 year olds just don not give a crap about footy anymore.

couldnt agree more moe, now just need a few more clubs to start thinking like that at board level and it might just happen

It is not club boards who need to make this decision, most clubs seem to want to go this way. It is the Old Guard at SFL house which is dead against progress. They seem to think big is better.

or

maybe they are just slowly but surely putting some clubs to the sword

Maybe the clubs need to put it to a vote at the AGM which is coming up

surely they wouldnt intentionally be putting clubs to the sword?
it doesnt take a genius to figure out that two divisions with the same amount of clubs is better financially than having one div with 3 or 4 less clubs in the future

Looks extremely fit and his positioning was good.
