Do guitarists that can play more than 3 or 4 chords confuse you? ;)

I like albums 30 minutes long.....not guitar solos. ;)

Rowland S Howard would rate up with the world's best. Changed the way the guitar was played in the 80's.

Tom Morello anyone? That guy is amazing.

Hendrix is amazing just for the fact he played with a left handed axe, upside down. Is that true?

I voted for Mark Knopfler.

Interesting that there are no female guitarists in the poll or in the subsequent suggestions...

I didn't see his name in the list before  and now I wish I could change my vote, Santana has to be up there, he's an absolute legend of a guitarist.

On reflection, could have included Joan Jett, Lita Ford or Donita Sparks, but it was hard enough keeping the list down to a manageable number as it was.

I second whoever said leave out the long guitar solos.

However I'll add a vote for a fretless bass player, Mick Karn of Japan.

I can't believe that Eddie Van Halen hasn't received a vote

Killer thread!
Everyone has their faves. I started playing the guitar when I saw Slash play the opening riff to Sweet Child! He isn't the greatest of all time, but he stirred the inner metal guitarist!
Guitarists take little licks and riffs from everywhere and create their own style. My style is blues based (Hendrix, Slash, SRV) mixed with some new metal (Jerry Cantrell, Adam Jones, Andreas Kisser) but I refuse to let my style get technical (Petrucci, Zappa, Vai) and wanky (Malmsteen, Morello)

When you're talking rock guitar, you have to break this thread into 3 different types: Riffs, leads, rhythm.

Best riffs: Hetfield, Corgan, Dimebag
Lead: Hammet, Ace Frehley
Rhythm: Malcolm Young, Hetfield, Richards
With that... a slight deflection to the next topic!
