Asian Champions League 2013

Postby Jim05 » Thu Feb 14, 2013 6:34 pm

Brisbane Roar have disgraced themselves and the A-League by failing to even make it to the main draw.
Lost to Thai side Buriram in the qualifying round.
0-0 at FT the game went to penalties where Brisbane missed all 3 attempts.
Central Coast will now be Australia's only side in the comp

I don't think the majority of A-League clubs care for the ACL, it comes at the wrong time of year, there is no great financial benefit (AU's campaign when they made the final being a classic example).

I would much prefer MV to worry about A-League and give some youngsters a chance in the ACL

Sometimes you have to look at the bigger picture, the A-League will always be considered a tinpot comp when we cant beat the likes of a Thai team.
Hard to attract players/sponsors if the league is considered a joke.
We made the decision to join Asia and we are hosting the Asian Cup soon, we need to be promoting our league a lot more and the ACL gives us the platform to do so.
Yes Adelaide didnt gain a lot monetary out of it but the coverage and exposure we got in Asia was awesome.

Disagreed, they're one of the wealthiest clubs in the world, they paid Conga 12.5 mil a year and at the time of his signing was only behind Messi and Ronaldo as far as wage goes. Also pay Barrios 9.5 mil a year.
Considering they also have Lippi coaching them who's won 5 Series As and a world cup and I think you couldn't be much more wrong mate.
They'd pay their players at least 15 times what the Mariners do!
I'm expecting a thrashing!

They can pay all they want, they have to. 15 billion chinese and they are all shite at soccer. Their league is a tinpot rubbish comp and not a scratch on the J-League or K-League
Money doesnt mean anything, Pohang's squad and coaches are paid 10 times the ammount of what AU get yet we have beaten them easily several times in the comp.
AU has never had much trouble with Chinese opposition in the past

Things were different last decade mate.
We'll see, if the Mariners win I'll bow to your superior knowledge.
If they don't we'll know I'm on the money.

Mariners went down 2-1 after scoring early.
In positive news though Matt Simon has rejoined the Mariners on a 1 year deal

Looks like I was right and you were wrong Jim, that Chinese side was five times better than anything Ive seen in the A-League which wasn't surprising looking at the players and coach they have.
Things are changing in Asia!

Not sure things are changing too much.
The other Chinese side were embarassed by a Korean side in their round of 16 match and the mob that beat you wont go much further in the comp.
The J and K leagues are still miles infront of the Chinese Super League standard wise. The bits I saw Guangzhou looked good in patches but maybe it is a reflection of where the A League sits at the moment unfortunately

Yep A-League standard is very poor at the moment, I think we are getting to the point where there is to many teams its diluting the standard of comp.

Not a whole lot of talent coming through proven by the fact a bunch of recycled players could win the minor premiership

When a Chinese side has a 5 time Series A champ and World Cup coach with players on more than 10 mil a year as opposed to the entire Mariners squad being on 2 mil and AU on 4 mil its very hard to compete!
We just don't have the money in soccer here to compete long term and on a consistent basis with Asians.

It is hard but not impossible.
In 2008 we had Pohang in our group, they were the most expensive side in Asia at the time and were worth 10 times what our club was. The coaches earnt more than our complete playing list. We turned them over home and away. We then beat a very expensive side in Kashima in the quarters and Bunyodkur in the semi who at the time had several players worth what our squad was at the time.
Money doesnt always equate to success but definately makes the job harder
