CCC Results, Reviews Season 2009 / 2010

Postby johntheclaret » Sat Aug 08, 2009 10:41 pm

So the fisrt game of the CCC season kicked off last night against two fancied sides. Only one shot on target in 90 minutes, boro have no one up front who will kick enough to make an impact at the top, and Sheffield still play thier hoof and run game.

Geeze the Championship is poor quality. :D ;)

Boro 0 - 0 Sheffield U

GOALLESS AT THE RIVERSIDE

Middlesbrough's bid to make an instant return to the Premier League got off to an inauspicious start as they were held to a goalless draw by Sheffield United in the opening game of the new season.

Gareth Southgate's revamped side were unable to find their way past last season's play-off final losers in front of a healthy crowd of close to 24,000 at the Riverside, as the north-east club kicked off their first season outside the top flight for 11 years.

Short of a handful of efforts from the edge of the area, neither side were able to trouble the other too much as the game eventually petered out into something that resembled another pre-season friendly.

Round up

Michael Chopra grabbed the first league goal at the new Cardiff City Stadium to help his side to a comfortable 4-0 win over promoted ****.
Chopra, who has returned to south Wales following an unhappy spell with Sunderland, drilled home from 25 yards in the 19th minute.
He nearly made it 2-0 four minutes later but saw his shot from the edge of the penalty box hit the post.
Jay Bothroyd did double the home side's lead in the 31st minute, tapping home from close range after good work from Joe Ledley.
Chopra claimed Cardiff's third on the stroke of half-time with a great finish, finding the roof of the net from 12 yards.
Peter Whittingham completed the humiliation with a stoppage-time penalty.

In the game which pitted the sons of two of the greatest managers the world of football has seen, Derby beat promoted Peterborough 2-1.
Miles Addison netted what was only his second career league goal in the fourth minute to give Nigel Clough - son of Forest legend Brian - the early advantage over Sir Alex Ferguson's son Darren.
George Boyd's penalty six minutes from time appeared to have given Peterborough a share of the spoils but Gary Teale bagged the winner from close range.

Leicester got their return to the Championship off to a great start as they came from behind to beat Swansea 2-1 at the Walkers Stadium.
Ashley Williams' header gave Swansea a half-time lead over last season's League One champions.
The hosts should have equalised shortly before the hour mark but Steve Howard saw his penalty saved by Dorus de Vries.
However, De Vries could do nothing in the 69th minute as Martyn Waghorn's shot was deflected past him and seconds later Danny N'Guessen scored the winner.

Barnsley came from behind to draw 2-2 with Sheffield Wednesday at Hillsborough.
Michael Gray scored one and set up the opener for Jermaine Johnson to give the hosts a comfortable half-time lead.
But Jacob Butterfield bagged his first senior goal on the hour mark and Jonathan Macken levelled matters in the 76th minute.

Blackpool boss Ian Holloway's return to Loftus Road was spoiled by a late QPR equaliser.
Ben Burgess' 37th-minute left-footed strike from 12 yards looked to have given them victory but Peter Ramage snatched a deserved share of the spoils four minutes from time when his cross floated over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

Summer signing Danny Graham helped new Watford boss Malky Mackey make a bright start in the Scot's first game in permanent charge at Vicarage Road against Doncaster, although they were held to a 1-1 draw.
The Hornets were this week ordered to pay Carlisle £200,000 for Graham's services by a tribunal but he started to pay a chunk of that off with the opener, tucking home Tommy Smith's cross from six yards.
However, James Hayter's looping header seven minutes before half-time secured a share of the points.

Krisztian Timar's fifth-minute marker gave Plymouth the lead but Alan Lee equalised for Crystal Palace in the 63rd minute.

A dramatic finish at Deepdale saw Preston draw 2-2 with Bristol City.
Paul Hartley's penalty broke the deadlock shortly after the break after Nicky Maynard was brought down by Youl Mawene.
And David Clarkson scored on his debut to double their lead in the 58th minute.
A cracking volley from Jon Parkin eight minutes from time set up a tense finale and Callum Davidson's stoppage-time penalty saw them snatched a share of the spoils

Reading were held to a goaless draw at the Madejski Stadium by Nottingham Forest, who had Luke Chambers sent off two minutes from time for an off-the-ball incident.

I keep forgetting to put a dot in there.

Fantastic staduim Marty. Watched highlights last night. Don't you just bloody believe it. The year the clarets are in the EPL, the BBC start screening CCC games live and an extended highlights programme on Saturday night.

Cardiff are definitely going to be there or thereabouts this year, Chopra was sharpe and has a good partner in Boothroyd (I think). 22,000 there today and the staduim looks great. A bit like Southamptons,

It's only a 100 yards from thier old one.

Coventry 2 Ipswich 1

Clinton Morrison's first-half brace ensured Roy Keane got off to a bad start to the Coca-Cola Championship season as his much-fancied Ipswich team fell at Coventry.

Morrison scored twice within the first 25 minutes to put Chris Coleman's side in charge and while Jon Walters quickly responded Coventry held on for all three points.

What a disgrace that was. Warnock is right. There would have been a riot had that happened at the other end.

And then the BC chairman came out and said he'd have to get all the facts before making a comment on it. What a donkey - just admit that your side got the benefit of a bad decision you nimrod.

The Bristol C players told the story... if the ball had come off the post surely they would have 'played on'?

Instead hands were on hips and they looked disappointed, you know, as if they had just conceded a goal.

Exactly. there were only 2 people who couldn't see that it was a goal - the ref and his assistant. The ref has now been stood down.

On another note in the Championship - what a result for Newcastle. They absolutely dominated Reading. Ameobi was brilliant, as was Guitierrez, Taylor and Nolan.

Round Up

Leaders West Brom ran amok at second-placed Middlesbrough to claim a 5-0 victory in the Coca-Cola Championship's match of the day.
Northern Ireland midfielder Chris Brunt fired the first of his two goals into the bottom corner from just outside the penalty area in the 17th minute and sent a 35-yard rocket high into the centre of goal just after the half-hour mark before Youssouf Mulumbu headed home Graham Dorrans' left-wing cross.
Roman Bednar and Jerome Thomas added to the score in the final 10 minutes to pile the misery on Middlesbrough, who slipped to their first home league defeat of the season.

Newcastle replace their north-east neighbours in second place following a 3-1 victory against winless Plymouth.
Steven Taylor headed Newcastle into a sixth-minute lead but Karl Duguid fired home from close-range five minutes after the break to equalise.
However, Kevin Nolan headed them back in front on the hour mark and Andrew Carroll added a third late on to preserve Newcastle's 100% home league record.

Jay Simpson swept QPR ahead in the 19th minute at promotion hopefuls Cardiff and doubled his personal tally five minutes before the interval to give the visitors a 2-0 win.

Lee Martin's first goal for Ipswich eased the pressure on manager Roy Keane but it was still not enough to give them their first win of the season in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Doncaster.
Martin fired home 11 minutes from time to give the visitors the lead for the first time in the match but Quinton Fortune ensured Rovers took a share of the spoils
Rookie striker Waide Fairhurst opened the scoring with a superb overhead kick in the 13th minute to add to his midweek debut goal for Doncaster.
Jack Colback and Tamas Priskin got Ipswich's other goals either side of Martin Woods' strike for Doncaster.

Blackpool's highly-rated midfielder Charlie Adam's 19th-minute strike was enough to send Ian Holloway's side to victory at Nottingham Forest, who fell to their third league defeat on home soil this season.

George Boyd's stoppage-time strike gave Peterborough their first victory of the season at home to Reading.
Gylfi Sigurdsson and Simon Church had put the Royals 2-0 up at half-time.
But Craig Mackail-Smith pulled one back three minutes after the restart and Aaron Mclean levelled matters in the 54th minute before Boyd grabbed the winner.

Watford almost also came back from two goals down to take all three points but Dany N'Guessan headed home a stoppage-time equaliser for Leicester.
Matty Fryatt had given the Foxes a 2-0 half-time lead, the first a 20th-minute penalty, but the hosts came back after the break through Danny Graham and Heidar Helguson.
Helguson thought he had won the game for his side in the 77th minute but N'Guessan popped up to snatch a point for Leicester.

Preston came from behind to beat Coventry 3-2 to move up to fourth spot in the table.
Coventry midfielder Sammy Clingan converted a first-half free-kick, firing a stunning 35-yard effort into the top corner to put Chris Coleman's side 1-0 up.
However, the hosts came back after the break thanks to a Chris Brown brace either side of Neil Mellor's strike.
Clinton Morrison volleyed in a late consolation for the visitors.

Grant McCann's stoppage-time goal gave Scun.thorpe a well-earned point at Ashton Gate as they ended Bristol City's 100% home record.
The Northern Ireland international, saw his 92nd-minute effort beat Adriano Basso in the City goal after it had looked as though Alvaro Saborio's first goal in English football had given the Robins a fourth straight win on home soil.

Elsewhere, Barnsley against Swansea ended goaless, while Darren Ambrose's 55th-minute strike gave Crystal Palace a 1-0 win at home to Derby.

Not a good result at palace this week, I think you are missing Mears ;) He won the fans MOTM this week.

I think Derby have to try and make sure they don't disappear into CCC mediocrity. Are they still debt ridden or was that all cleared off with the new investor?

Kevin Nolan's first hat-trick of his professional career helped to lift Newcastle to the top of the Coca-Cola Championship.
The Magpies routed Ipswich 4-0 at Portman Road to leave Roy Keane's side one place off the foot of the table and still searching for their first league win since he took charge.
It was three goals in five mad minutes that crushed Ipswich, with Nolan scoring the first two just after the half-hour before Ryan Taylor added the third.
Midfielder Nolan then grabbed the match ball with his third and United's fourth in the 51st minute.

Newcastle now lead the way after West Brom suffered their first league defeat of the season.
Just a week after crushing Middlesbrough 5-0 at the Riverside, the Baggies were beaten 1-0 by Crystal Palace at The Hawthorns as 19-year-old Alassane N'Diaye scored his first goal for the club.

As for Middlesbrough, they suffered further agony, drawing 2-2 with Coventry at the Ricoh Arena where Leon Best grabbed a 95th-minute equaliser.
Gareth Southgate's side had led 2-0 at the interval with goals from on-loan Sean St Ledger and Rhys Williams, only for the Sky Blues to salvage a point through Clinton Morrison and Best's late finish.

Preston have leapfrogged Boro into third as they ended Leicester's 24-match unbeaten league record at the Walkers Stadium with a 2-1 victory.
Neil Mellor scored just prior to the break, with Richard Chaplow adding a second in the 66th minute, leaving Bruno Berner's 90th-minute effort nothing more than a consolation.

Blackpool are up to fifth after they added to Peterborough's woes with a 2-0 win at Bloomfield Road where Jason Euell and Hameur Bouazza were on target inside the opening 11 minutes.

Sheffield United have dropped to sixth as they suffered a 2-1 loss at Swansea, even though they had two players sent off.
Lee Trundle gave the Swans a 52nd-minute lead before Stephen Quinn equalised 21 minutes later, with the hosts' Jordi Lopez seeing red on 77 minutes.
Despite being down to 10 men, it was Swansea who grabbed the win through Tom Butler before Nathan Dyer was dismissed in the 94th minute.

Doncaster also had two men sent off as they let slip a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at ****.
A Martin Woods penalty and a second from former Iron striker Billy Sharp put Rovers in control.
But first John Oster was dismissed, and after Clint Byrne had pulled one back, Quinton Fortune was then sent off, with Grant McCann equalising in the 93rd minute.

QPR rattled a handful past struggling Barnsley in a 5-2 romp at Loftus Road, although it was touch and go for a short period as Rangers had led 3-0 before being pegged back to 3-2.
Mikele Leigertwood and a double from Akos Buzsaky had put the home side firmly in control in the first half before Stephen Foster and Andy Gray scored twice in five second-half minutes to rattle a few nerves.
However, on-loan duo Jay Simpson and Ben Watson, from Arsenal and Wigan respectively, managed to wrap up the points with goals in the 67th and 79th minutes.

Goals from Etienne Esajas, Luke Varney and Leon Clarke helped Sheffield Wednesday to a 3-1 win at Hillsborough over Cardiff who had Joe Ledley sent off in the 73rd minute.
Gary Teale's 85th-minute winner was enough to see Derby beat a 10-man Bristol City side 1-0 at Pride Park as the visitors' Jamie McCombe saw red in the 55th minute.

Reading are still without a win at the Madejski Stadium since January as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Watford, who had Nathan Ellington sent off late on.
