League 1 & 2 Discussion thread Season 2010 / 2011

Not a happy story to get the thread up and running, but one I feel will be all too common this year.

OWLS HIT WITH WINDING-UP PETITION

By Press Association Sport staff

Sheffield Wednesday have been issued with a winding-up petition by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs, the club have said in a statement.
The action by HMRC relates to an outstanding PAYE balance of £550,000 and the club say the petition will be heard in the High Court on August 11.
However, Wednesday have sought to reassure their fans that the club is "not about to be wound up, nor is it about to enter into administration".
The statement added: "We have been involved in dialogue with HMRC for a number of weeks.
"As such we have been somewhat surprised and disappointed by their decision to seek a winding-up order at this time."

GAVIN GRANT JAILED FOR 25 YEARS

By Shenai Raif, Press Association

Footballer Gavin Grant was jailed for life for shooting a former friend and told he would have to serve at least 25 years.
The 26-year-old former Millwall striker thought he had got away with murder after Leon Labastide, 21, was gunned down outside his parents' home in 2004.
Grant had been cleared in August 2007 of the shooting murder of Jahmall Moore.
But justice caught up with him when he was charged with Mr Labastide's murder after new witnesses came forward.

Gareth Downie, 25, and Damian Williams, 32, were also jailed for life and given minimum terms of 25 years - Downie for murdering Mr Labastide and Williams for conspiracy to murder.

As Grant was being sentenced at the Old Bailey, a woman shouted from the public gallery: "It's all fixed" and "You are coming out".
Uproar broke out in the public gallery as the men were led to the cells. Williams lifted a fist defiantly and told his supporters: "Fight".

The Recorder of London, Judge Peter Beaumont, said Mr Labastide's murder had been in revenge for a series of "tit-for-tat" shootings.
He said: "He was executed by shooting."
Mr Labastide's mother, Diane Havill, said in a statement: "Leon was a keen footballer who shared his passion for the game with all who knew him. He loved life.
"His senseless killing by so-called friends who grew up with him has left it hard for me to understand the futility of snatching Leon's future whilst, in the same breath, destroying their own."
She said she had moved her family from the Stonebridge Park area because she could not face seeing the relatives of his killers.

Grant, from Kenton, north London, Williams, of Southwark, south London, and Downie, of Markby Road, Birmingham, looked angry as they were sentenced.
A charge that Grant had committed perjury at his trial for murdering Mr Moore, 22, was allowed to lie on file.
Roberto Parchment, 24, originally convicted of Mr Moore's murder, was found guilty again following a retrial in December brought about by supergrass Darren Mathurin's involvement.

Grant has also played for Gillingham and Wycombe Wanderers and was with Bradford City last season.

JTC, not much action on this site, but enjoying the current position of Bournemouth, was born there a few years ago. What has happened there, last year they were deducted points for being in Administration and now threating to get promoted to the Championship. Paid a visit there on my last trip, surely they would have to upgrade their ground if by some chance they receive promotion. What is the go with that sort of thing. Have they rules on ground capacity for each division. I know Blackpool had to (correct me if wrong) upgrade for their EPL season.

Correct mate although the rules are fairly relaxed for the lower divisions. I remember Accrington had to upgrade their ground in order to get into the league a few years back and Stevenage who won the Blue Square premiership weren't promoted because of the standard of thier ground.

I know you must have a certain amount of seating area for both home and away fans, crowd segregation and adequate facilities, toilets, food etc. I'm sure Bournemouth will have no problems.

You do realise that our current manager Eddie Howe was in charge at Bournemouth until 3 weeks ago. And midfielder Bately joined us from there on the on the last day of the transfer window.

I think we paid just under a million for him.

In fact we have quite an infinity with Bournemouth. Steve cotterill our manager before Coyle, was a Bournemouth lad and he brought 3 Bournemouth players to the clarets, Wade Elliott, Gareth O'Conner and John Spicer. Elliott scored the winning goal in the 2009 play off final. The £60m goal that got us into The EPL last year

Well that was very very disappointing...

Peter Taylor is an idiot, I could see (from Australia) that playing 1 up front wasn't going to cut it, Dobie was stranded with no support so as soon as the long ball went forward, it just came straight back...

Injuries have killed us this year especially in central midfield and it should today, totally dominated in the midfield... because the ball was just coming straight back at them...

As soon as Speight came in to make it 442 (in the last 10 minutes) we dominated... and could easily have gotten an (ill-deserved) equaliser...

Next game is against the top team... Yay... :( :)

I'm suprised to see Bradford performing so poorly this year Jase. Peter Taylor is a top manager and has had reasonable success at most clubs he's been at. Did a great job with the England U 21's

Personally think he's living on past glories and the game has passed him by. City have been atrocious this year, they have used 35 players and had 8 captains... I think he might have had an unchanged team only once and constantly tinkered and made player changes for no apparent reason.

But thankfully he is gone, in charge of the team on Saturday ( a true 6 pointer) but then is leaving... I just hope the replace him with a motivator, we have the cattle just need to get them working for each other...

In League 1, Leyton Orient are in a very good patch of form. I think it was around November, they were only a few points out of the relegation spots. They're now sitting 9th with games in hand.
Whereas Sheffield Wednesday have stopped. They've gone from being in the playoff spots, to about 16th spot.

Well Peter Taylor is gone and was replaced in the interim by Peter Jackson, ex-club captain and centre half. Was captain of the club the day of the fire and he went into the stands to save his father and daughter... He has also managed Huddersfailed but we will forgive him this once...

Had is first game on Saturday against Gillingham and we suffered another 2-0 loss, though reports suggest the style of play and fight was much better...

Big game Tuesday night against Rovrum... another team doing well this year, and if we lose this it is definitely squeaky bum time...

Plymouth went into administration last week. Have been docked 10 points and now sit bottom of Lg 1
News is they have made 1/2 the staff redundant and the rest are working without pay. Unless they can raise some funding by 15th March they will close.
Isn't Risdale, formerly of Leeds and Cardiff, the owner there now. Hmmmm do I see a connection here?

How is this peanut allowed to still run a club? Surely for the benefit of football he needs to be booted out.

Icant understand how he gets away with it. He is clever because he puts them in administration which isn't the same as goi g bust, and then buys them back at a knock down price with only the creditors losing out.

I remember the Leeds creditors got £0.07p in the £pound. Shocking considering only 12 months later Leeds had made so much profit they could afford to buy back the ground.

So many creditors would have lost so much money, many of them small one man bands
