Swearing on SA Footy

Postby Dogwatcher » Tue Apr 16, 2013 8:38 am

I think it's soft that this website does not allow swear words and phrases such as these to be used by posters, just because some kids or women might wander in and be confronted by bad language.
If people don't wish to be confronted by swear words, they should just move on. It's not rocket science FFS.
I also note that a prominent poster on this site was banned over the weekend for using a word that refers to a female body part. I think admin should toughen up and stop acting like princesses.
At least we can now type the name Johncock, unlike in the past when the site admin were being extremely petty and PC.
If it's allowed at the footy, it should be allowed here. Stop being so hypocritical, admin.
Free the swear words.

Thanks for the feedback DW, as you are well aware it comes down to personal opinion and the approach we take has been debated over many years. Personally I don't care about swear words and I agree we have been a little too harsh but can you understand others concern with them so we've basically tried to appease as many people as possible.
Perhaps a poll on the subject, this site is so fantastic because of its members and I'm always willing to change be flexible with the site in most regards to suit the needs of most of its users.
I'm interested in others feedback and what people think are appropriate for a website opened up in peoples workplaces, etc.

Well, you've obviously got your thoughts on the issue, Wedgie, share them with us.
Why is it okay to swear at the footy, around women and children, and not on this site?

Well played, by the way

I told you, personally I think its fine.its horses for courses with me, I have no problem with people swearing at the footy or in the front bar but at an Opera or funeral it wouldn't be appropriate IMHO.

My decisions/input/thoughts about this website are to get maximum participation and a lot of that takes into account people in workplaces. What happens at the footy is the SANFLs concern but a website is different as at the footy you could just move to the family friendly area where I don't want people to move away from this website.
Ideally a "family friendly area" option on here might be good that turns the swear filter on and off may be an option, I'm not sure if its doable or not.

So, it's okay to use offensive language continually in front of kids but not upset the boss?
I understand that, kids don't pay the bills after all.

And, of course, you would have to appease the advertisers, who might not wish to be associated with a site that allows such language.

I told you mate, I'm just about keeping most people that use the site happy. If it was like the footy and people could simply move whilst enjoying the same product it would be a lot easier. I'll start a poll to get some opinions.

I dont think its that big of an issue. You can say most swear words you might need to use. The filters been modified in the last few months I reckon. Unless you wanna say the F word or the C word (which isnt really necessary on here) I dont see what the problem is.

If you wanna swear at or to people, theres a million other sites to do it on.

That's a fair call as we usually take peoples history and if they have warnings into account as opposed to one off discretions, I can understand how this approach would appear inconsistent.
