Accommodation -$$$$$ or c?

Holidays, where, to go, how to get there, travel stories.

Also agree.

We're off to Northern Italy, Slovenia, etc in May and have booked mainly B & B's and medium-range, but well-priced and recommended hotels.

Anonymous hotel rooms don't really do it, even if they're well appointed.

An occasional splurge is great, if there's a good reason for it; eg: the Banff Springs, or a hotel looking over Boston Harbor. Years ago, you could get great deals with the airfare, so I once stayed at The Ambassadors in LA for $1 a night. Could have played a footy game in the room and had space left over.

Agree on the occasional Splurge. Like Vegas for example - I'd love to stay in one of the Bellagio or Venetian's suites.
Did you like the Banff Springs? I've heard bad reports. It's a bueatiful building in a great spot, but I've heard the rooms are pokey and average.
Anyone going to Banff and wanting to class it up, I'd recommend the Fox. Brilliant hotel with an amazing spa and a kick ass bar when the hockey is on!

this xmas holidays example
eg, paid $280 for a nice room in the port lincoln hotel (inc breakfast) over new years. it was good.

however the next two days we camped at memory cove, right on this awesome secluded beach. It had one long drop toilet, no water.
evenings spent with our deck chairs, fishing rods and BBQ on the beach. unbeatable.
Cost $16 per night.

as long as you are prepared with water, ice, wine, food, tent and prepared to piss under a tree, no better place to spend a night.

This is a banging example of the point of this thread. Nothing better than swagging it by a lake/river/beach!

There's something about waking in the middle of the night in a daze, realising where you are and just taking in the silence, stars and general ambience!

da, I was at the Banff Springs over 20 years ago and loved it. The rooms were good, but not big (from memory), but the outdoor heated pool with views was great. I think often the splurge is worth the experience and it certainly was in that case.

I took a photo there that I should have sent in to 'Hey, Hey, It's Saturday'.

In a corridor there were three identical signs above each of 3 doors.

The first said 'MEN"

The second said 'WOMEN'

I swear that the third said:

'ACCOUNTING"

:D :D

I've been trying to hide it, FC, without success :(

Then again, it was 25 years ago and I've now caught up with these new-fangled digital SLR thingies ;)

There's no need to stay at really expensive places and often Bed and Breakfast places are really good.

Trip Advisor or Booking.com are excellent sites for accommodation.

Couldn't recommend that site enough!

No point staying in a dive because it's dirt cheap, but you don't want to pay top dollar for a somewhere where you're just going to sleep.

Excellent point. You always need to research all of the accommodation in the place of where you're looking to go to find the balance.

When I was a youngie, I backpacked around Europe and hitchhiked around Ireland. Stayed in hostels and friend's floors. I would like to say that I've worked hard and earned the 4/5 star accommodation I enjoy now. Yes, as you get older, you definitely gather more stars.
