Margaret River Region - WA

Postby AFLflyer » Mon Jan 16, 2012 3:20 pm

Hey all,
seeing i got some ripper tips for the Eyre Penin this year, though i'd start a thread on our next destination, which i know little about.
April this year we are are hiring a campervan from Perth. MArgaret River area looks like the best region to explore (seeing we only have 7 days)
any tips or suggestions? camping spots etc?
It's either that or concentrate on Albany and surrounds?

Although a few years ago now, I found it to be a fantastic region to explore. The B & B’s were unreal and offered many types for accommodation. The meals at the Leeuin Estate, Vasse Felix, Cullens wineries extraordinary. The Indian Restaurant in Margaret River a bit cheaper but again exceptional. The wineries are mostly pretty small except those mentioned above and have the wine maker serving, so you get a lot about the region and the styles from each visit. I thought I might get bored with that area and planned to go to Albany but never got there. The beaches are brilliant and the forests very different to SA and a must to experience.
I have planned to go back but the airfare to Perth keeps putting me off.

Stay away from Palandri Wines - or, at least, keep a very firm hand on your valuables.
They are being investigated by ASIC

And don't forget to come to Perth, there's some excellent places to eat here if you're a foodie.

Hated Margaret River. Over rated, similar to Byron Bay. Full of faux hippies and surfers with attitudes. Head to the south coast. Towns like Pemberton, Walpole, Denmark, Albany, Bridgetown and if you can make it that far Esperance (best beaches in Oz).

Camping spot of your dreams is in the Warren National Park. In amongst the tall timber, rangers drop fire wood off for you every morning (even in the summer), marron when the season is on, swimming in the clear water. Climb the fire look out trees, go to the beach and fish. Would love to live there, but unless you want to be an avocado picker, there isn't much work.

Nice work TSG! Feel free to keep posting amazing spots like that!

RE: Esperance, I work for a tour company and we've just cut a stack of our tours out to Esperance, due to lack of demand. People don't know what they're missing!

All of our WA colleagues agree that Esperance is the best beach in Aus by a mile and quite possibly the world. Biased much? I don't think so when you see pics like the above!

Esperance is amazing. The beaches, the islands, fishing, bushwalking, fresh air and food. Just don't drink the tap water. Learnt the hard way that it's stored in tanks. Everyone should see West Australia, and everyone should drive the Nullarbor.

The one I really can't understand is Ningaloo Reef. About 1 billion times better than the GBR and only 50m from shore in most places.

I guess it's a good thing that it's not been turned into Honolulu Mk2. But I just cannot understand why it's not more popular!

Then there's Karijini NP!!!

Kalbarri, Cervantes, Kimberley Coast, Bungle Bungles. Endless places. Puts the East Coast to shame.
