My philosophy is 'Don't f**k up, and you don't have anything to worry about'. The same can't be said for a percentage of drivers on the roads these days...
Politicians kissing babies for good luck,
TV preachers sell salvation for a buck.
You don't need no golden cross to tell you wrong from right,
The world's worst murderers were those who saw the light.

Didn't the NT government just decide speeding wasn't the major factor and raise speed limits because the road toll went up when they lowered them earlier?
The shift in thinking is emerging in the UK too: http://news.carrentals.co.uk/uk-governm ... 49346.html

The maker of this comment however still apparently thought they should ignore the other factors he mentioned and keep the speeds lower rather than try to do something about stupidity.
(When I drive I do none of these other things.)
One safety campaigner said that it is not really the fact that people cannot handle a speed limit of 80mph, because they can.
They simply cannot do it while they are in the middle of trying to eat, talk on the phone, and mess with the radio.
People already spent little time focusing on the road, and increasing the speed limit is going to get more people hurt.

Went from unlimited to 130 on the highway, and looks as though it will be reverted back to unlimited. Going to need a faster car.

I managed 90 miles per hour up the M1 in a Peugeot 107.
I'm not sure which engine it had: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peugeot_107

The 107 lacks a little in ground clearance even on some bitumen roads in the UK.
It also struggled a little climbing through the Snowdons in the back roads, but it got me there.

A pastoralist in the NT that I talked to at last year's Royal Show swears by Isuzu utes for real work.
He said he'd bought his daughter a Mazda, but added, "Well, she only uses it to take a bit of feed to her horses."
He didn't seem to think much of any other choices.

I'd say people's inability to control a car at speed would be the biggest factor and this speed will vary dependant on the skill of the driver.

Try again.

I add my best wishes and sympathy.
My father had chronic and severe asthma in the days when the treatment was limited.
I'm just glad I didn't develop it too.

Perhaps too much emphasis is on promoting the safety features of cars nowadays. Obviously the safety features are important but perhaps there are people who think that the safety features will make them (the drivers & passengers) safe at any speed, under any circumstances. Even a collision at relatively moderate speed an occupant of a car will suffer serious injury or even death when not wearing a seat belt. Wrapping a car around a tree or stobie pole, no safety features is going to save you in that circumstances. Certainly keep (and improve) the safety features, but perhaps less promoting of the safety features or a campaign that emphasises that safety features can't always protect the occupants of a car. As they say the most important safety component of a car, is the nut (idiot) holding the steering wheel.
