LOL mine does too - he can't get far enough away from them. Luckily for him I don't get the broom out as often as I should.

My experience is that small dogs get excited about brooms.
The Australian Terrier when I had when I was a kid would attack them.
The Dalmatians my first wife and I had ignored them.
The Wolfhounds would lie there and expect you to sweep around them, and one would roll over to have his tummy rubbed with it.

Why I ticked the "willing to help" box on my sons Year 4/5 school cricket team permission slip.

I am now the coach (by default) as I'm the only one who ticked a box.

So anyone got any ideas on how to coach Year 4/5 cricket..?

What school?

That age bracket just get kids to hit the ball or bowl it on the pitch. Don't complicate things with technique

Coached my boys school cricket for the past four years. Make sure right at the start that all parents are expected to help with scoring and setting the ground up, its not you doing everything. Dont think you can do it all yourself, its impossible.
I also found it helpful that at that age group everyone has to bowl two overs, make sure you have a sheet of paper in your pocket and mark off each over they bowl so you dont have to keep asking "have you bowled two". Some kids try to sneek an extra over sometimes.

Like Brodlach says make sure right at the start that all parents are expected to help with scoring and setting the ground up, its not you doing everything. Dont think you can do it all yourself, its impossible.

At this age just concentrate on the fundamentals remember that your dominant hand should be at the bottom of the bat try that with them two or three will really thank you when they work it out. Also whilst bowling get them to think about both arms not just the one with the ball. The front arm needs to be upright, across and out before delivery and used in the action as much as the one with the ball. They need to enjoy the game so make sure you give them plenty of stimulation move them around the field so they don’t get stuck at long off. Catching practice so they don’t break their fingers Catch like an aussie not a pom. Basics of fielding and backing up, although if it is their first year they won’t get it yet but if you keep with the group you will see it come off in later years and it will be worth while and bring a smile to your face. You and them just have to have fun but a structured approach rather than chaos helps you. :D

Thanks for the tips guys...

Firstly... I'm not Irish (I don't think, though that may explain a few things...)

Heater, school is King's Baptist Grammar School, up in Wynn Vale...

Haven't got all of the details yet, but I'm assuming that the batsmen bat for 4 overs (as a pair) doesn't matter how many times they get out and have to retire at 20(?) if you get there. Also 2 overs per bowler.

I've had a look on the SACA site for actual rules etc, but couldn't find any, does anyone else know where I might find them?

I really encourage the kids no matter what. You will find some will drop their lip pretty quick if they dont get it quite right. IMO its better to over encourage them then not enough as you want them to play again next season.

I also put a chalk mark on the pitch so when they come into bowl they had to look at that one spot to try and keep their head still. Those that concentrated on that improved alot quicker than others.

Got the rules correct except you dont have to retire at 20. Swap batters if they face 3 balls and dont score.

Other thing I found is the different attitude to the no ball rule. Some are strong on the two bouce no ball and some are a little more lenient, especially if your kids a a little lower standard. Make sure you discuss this before each match otherwise arguments can occur. Had one coach that wanted to fight all the parents of our team as he was a really stickler for every rule because his son was a very good player. Didnt care about the other 17 kids on the ground, only his. He thought he was playing test match cricket

Cool, thanks for that... I also saw that it's 8 a side, that should make it nice and open for the boys to have a smash and give the boys a chance to get some runs...

I'm really looking forward to it, should be good fun...

I was trying to remember the details from when I played year 4/5 cricket when I was playing for Surrey Downs in 83-84. I reckon we had to retire when we got to 20 (or 30)... not that I ever got there...

Edit: Thanks for the link Alaska...
