Haven't got all of the details yet, but I'm assuming that the batsmen bat for 4 overs (as a pair) doesn't matter how many times they get out and have to retire at 20(?) if you get there. Also 2 overs per bowler.

I've had a look on the SACA site for actual rules etc, but couldn't find any, does anyone else know where I might find them?

Got the rules correct except you dont have to retire at 20. Swap batters if they face 3 balls and dont score.

Cool, thanks for that... I also saw that it's 8 a side, that should make it nice and open for the boys to have a smash and give the boys a chance to get some runs...

I'm really looking forward to it, should be good fun...

I was trying to remember the details from when I played year 4/5 cricket when I was playing for Surrey Downs in 83-84. I reckon we had to retire when we got to 20 (or 30)... not that I ever got there...

Edit: Thanks for the link Alaska...

Reckon in years 6-7 you played more of a traditional game where if you were out you were out, but had to retire at 30 if you made it.

Years 4-5 we played average cricket where you and your partner batted for 4-6 overs. Your team then had total runs scored divided by wickets lost. Highest average won.

I agree with the others too- make it fun wherever possible!

Year 4/5 cricket they bat in pairs for 4 overs, so with 8 per side you end up with 16 overs total.

In the field basically 3 fielders on each side of the pitch and you rotate them around in a clockwise direction, so every child fields in a different position including as keeper and they get 2 overs each

And yes some coaches at like real idiots when it comes to the rules. FFS it's about the kids and the role is to help the kids out as much as possible

Don't coach them, at least until you've had chat with someone from SACA. Make sure they all bat and bowl and are safe.

Don't let anyone complicate things. School cricket is a participation game.

That's where I disagree, some basic skills need to introduced at this level. Especially the opportunity to discover the correct use of the bat for an individual and the awareness of the bowling action.
This is where SACA have got it wrong trying to change kids too late. Look at what WA and Victoria are doing in this area. Once a kid at 9 has decided he is a right hander he will not change when he is 12 under stress trying to qualify for sapsasa, district bullsh#t and club try outs. Even if he just wants to play junior club cricket what he learnt when he was 9 and 10 sticks for a long time.

I will not dwell on the ridiculous junior district program we have. :(

The kids need to have fun first and foremost but if you teach them one skill each week eg. down on one knee for fielding and remind them as you are umpiring by going down on the knee each opportunity during the games it becomes habit. Same with catching, backing up, bowling and batting basic skills as it becomes habit they get better and enjoy it more.

You missed the bit where I said to speak to someone first. Teaching nothing is far more preferable to teaching poorly or too technically.

How busy is the city to Glenelg tram around the 5pm to 6pm period?

Does it reach its peak around 5.30 (ie. trams leaving the city around then), or is it usually fairly packed for all the trams leaving the city between that period (5pm - 6pm)?

Union. PSA/CPSU

A good idea to join or not?

Just joined Families SA as a youth worker and the union came around yesterday during training to sign us all up.

Normally 1% of baseline salary but because we are casual it's a once off $55 for the year.

I'm leaning towards yes because of the false allegations that can be made and they also have a couple of other covers that aren't too bad either. Plus the cheap holiday accommodation available around the state...

Any info would be great...

Despite now being a Liberal Party member, I've always joined the Union wherever I worked, on principle.
I believe in the fundamental purpose of them, although I have less faith in them now as they seem to be more into power-broking than representing their members.

I was a PSA member for over 7 years but never had to call on them for anything but a cheap loan when I bought a property one time.
The only Union I objected to having to join was the Students' Union at University.

PS: Seeing some Unions leave Workers' Comp claimants high and dry when the Bannon government was economising on WorkCover SA didn't help.

As a Union Delegate I feel joining the union is a good thing. But it is an individuals choice to join one.

PSA - In my opinion the most ineffective union ever. Also they tried to bully people into joining when i first started.

I work for a government organisation where out of about 900 employees there is about 5 people who are not in the union. Why should they pay nothing yet receive the same pay rises and benefits that we receive through the hard work of the union? Hence everyone knows who the non members are and they dont receive any favours from me or most other people.
Even if you dont support the union atleast supoort your work mates who are paying membership each week, the fee is tax deductable, and who knows you may need them for some legal support or advice if you ever have any ssues in the work place.
I'm number 1, so why try harder!!

If they are willing take care of their own issues and pay for their own legal support - why should they have to be in the union?
