Think over there they have far more pressing issues that are a threat to public safety like reliable electricity supply and adequate back up supply for instance......

Late February / early March?

Pretty sure farmers, the ones I know ( in the mid-North ), don't spend much time out in 44°. Not the smart ones, anyway.

Couldn't they just make their own starting and finishing times based on the sunrise and sunset. So instead of a 5am start, its a 4am start, and finish an hour earlier than normal?

Whats the problem with that? They get more of their afternoon for activities.

What the clock says has no effect on the actual daylight hours.

exactly. a farmers 10 hour day (for example) is still a 10 hour day whether he starts it at 4am by the clock, or 5 am by the clock. the clock part is completely irrelevant.

look at it this way, they get to have an hours sleep in every day during daylight savings

What I'm trying to say is they can't start at 4am or 5am, it's still dark. If they work their 10 hour day, more of it is spent in the hotter part of day due to a later start.

So if they used to start at sunrise, then work for 10 hours, whats to stop them doing that now?

that has nothing to do with the time of the clock they start at. that has everything to do with the fact there is just more daylight hours during summer.......

or are you one of those people that actually believe that there is more daylight because of daylight savings?

Dinner-time is 12 pm DST or no DST.

The country hour at noon, on 5 CK, come in for a bit of dinner, listen to the wireless, get the market prices from the Gepps Cross sales, current rural news, Out again for the afternoon shirt finish at about 5;30 pm, in for a wash, tea at 6 pm.

Clockwork

I think we need to stop and think for a bit, get the right outcome.

What is easier to recalibrate, a cows milking pattern or the clock in your car?

If we were logical with our climate and did what a lot of other countries did we'd send the click back an hour and do our of our business in the cooler evenings. Doing the opposite and ensuring more of our work is done during the hottest part of the day is just beyond ridiculous.

So drink in the morning and work at night? I like it, bar the drink / driving aspect.

Nah, drink at night, sleep in, work, rinse and repeat.
Most pubs are open to 3am, it would be 5am under my plan and they wouldn't bother opening up as early as they do now. It makes sense!

So move our whole working day from let's say 8am-5pm to say 2pm-11pm?
