Why do people think reducing waste is a bad thing? Because it might mildly inconvenience them?

It's not a bad thing.

But its a bit redundant when the same people use a shitload of one use plastic products anyway.

Also, being it the paper industry, I know China is shutting down a lot of recycled pulp mills, so this increase in paper usage for straws is resulting in a lot of virgin pulp being produced.

China used to accept the worlds paper waste and recycle it. Not anymore.

Using virgin paper results in more air and water pollution, as well as driving costs up.

So pretty quickly, the change from plastic straws to paper may actually cause more damage to the environment than leaving it as is.

Not I my friend, I have a very advanced recycling system at home that everyone has adapted to, and in the office at work.

I did find banning the sale of straws in Woolies as a redundant move though, they can still be recycled, it's the lazy human that prevents.

There's plenty of other things that could go on the prohibited list first IMO.

Depends what the alternative is.

But I still think it's more of a faux-cause than anything else.

The same as when people talk about having "keep cups" and then using them for these bad boys...

There's more plastic in the pods than the paper coffee cups. Also, current paper cup manufacturers are producing cups with degradable plastic lining on the inside of the cup.

Nup

I’m not that great at recycling myself - other than the standard stuff - but if the govt forced me to change my ways (like the shopping bag ban) I’m not gonna get that upset about it because I can see the merits behind it

I don’t necessarily think it’s a faux cause - apparently the straws find themselves into the ocean a lot

But I also don’t really feel strongly enough to be outraged, for or against

It's been found that washing cloth nappies is worse for the environment than disposing the throw away nappies.

I’ve heard that too. But even so - that change would significantly affect my life.

Paying $20 a year for plastic bags - or actually remembering to take bags - doesn’t really affect my life.

I'm a big advocate for banning the free bags, I feel a bit guilty when I go interstate and they put like two items in each of them, I appreciate SA's approach much better.

I don't think the change in rules for the bags has necessarily been successful in its original goal. They replaced lower micron bags with higher micron bags, and sold them for a profit.

The old free bags have been made illegal in SA, and the free thinner bags you can still get from some places are designed to degrade much better than the older ones.

We are now legally allowed to give out 35um bags for free in SA. Big supermarkets just choose not to, and charge a premium for what feels like a 70um bag.

Agreed, I manage it and I'm hopeless. It's not a big deal.

It's one thing to take them to the shop, it's another to remember to take them out of the car before you do your shopping
