50k ZONES
The last time I was sprung for speeding was doing 58 in a 50 zone
It was on Shepherdson Road Parafield Gardens
I rarely venture to this part of Adelaide , and did not know it was a 50 zone
Fortunately I was only doing 58 thinking it was a 60 zone

PROPOSAL FOR METROPOLITAN ARTERIALS ?
Changing of speed limits here there and everywhere can be confusing, well they are to me
I have a proposal , fairly simple in concept, perhaps harder to administer
Segregate all arterials to Roads v Others
The following limits are what I suggest

All Roads : Minimum 60kms
All Others : Maximum 40km or 50kms, one or the other

That would be simple logic
You would have to rename a swag of arterials from roads to streets though[and vice versa]
Shepherdson Road would become Shepherdson Street [or raise the limit back to 60 and leave it as a Road]

60-70 KM ROAD ZONES
Also confusing
The example I will use
Montague Road Ingle Farm
There is a speed camera set up in the 60 zone near the corner of Beovich Road[Near the Ingle Farm Shopping Centre]
Yet Montague Road, between Walkleys road and Bridge road it is 70km
This road should be 60km for both durations perhaps ?

40-50 KM ZONES
This is most annoying
Some Streets as in Prospect and Unley are 40km zones
Yet in other areas streets are 50km zones
I suggest one or the other

SUMMARY
Less confusion , more consistency of known speed limits , perhaps = better safety , and perhaps lower roll fatalities

Or they could create some sort of signage that depicts the speed limit, like a number in a red circle or something like that...

It needs to be kept simple and easily recognisable without having to look for signs cloaked by trees and bends or too many changes of limit.
Victoria's system based on having no whites lines in residential streets (50kph) but white lines for streets that are 60kph or above helps motorists.

So:
CBD and residential suburban streets 40kph - identifiable by no white lines at the edges or, perhaps, coloured lines.
General roads 60 kph - designated by white lines on the edges.
Wider major roads 80kph or 100kph depending on the situation - designated by white lines and signs.
Major interstate routes and free-ways 120kph - signposted.

I like the NSW tendency to paint changes in speed limits on the road surface in large numbers that are hard to miss seeing at the place of change.

It is pretty clear that it is now 50 unless otherwise signposted.

But I do agree that it is confusing at times, particularly on side streets. Where it could change from 60, to 50 and then back to 60 in a short time

I was actually going to mention this too, glad you did. It wouldn't be that hard to paint lines on the road to differentiate between 50 and 60. And if there are no lines then it is 50

Too easy chief.....wait a minute thats gonna cost the government double revenue loss....no speeders because of the signs and the cost of the signs.

I wonder what the difference in price is to paint speed limits on roads as to the production and installation of an easily broken/stolen/covered by trees sign....

The initial cost would be very high I would imagine, repainting all the lines. But once it is done it wouldn't be any more than their normal maintenance cycle, assuming paint colours all cost the same

People would become oblivious and blind to the lines after a short time anyway..

The advantage would be you could glance and know at any time what the speed is. At present you can't do that

Painted lines/ numbers are a bit harder to see at night when its raining....or is that just me?

Yeah good point. That makes it harder.

I have driven once in the UK but they had good rules - dual carriageway was 70, single carriageway 60, built up area 30.

You knew exactly where you were without having to worry about a sign. They did have some other signs but setting defaults like this and largely sticking to them is the problem here. Scrapping 60 altogether would probably help, although it would increase travel times.

This was brought up not long ago.
The reason given for not painting limits on roads was that it would be too slippery

Very good point
Why should some councils have backstreets at 40 km and others 50 km

So why and how did the councils get this power to set speed limits ?

My guess would be to dodge the massively long consultation process by having to have it passed through state government.

Still don't agree with it though.

Trouble is, you sometimes forget about this - some roads just 'feel' like 60 roads when they're really 50 roads.

This is especially the case in a manual - 50 is annoying because it's too fast for 3rd gear, but a tad slow for 4th; the car kind of wants to go faster.

I hate the roads that dont change at all but suddenly the speed drops and goes from 70 to 60 etc
