When I was 17, it was a very good year....

Just carrying on from the shits thread where it appears that everyone is so angry now compared to 10, 20 or 30 years ago...

Lets face it, none of us were probably angels.

Me the private school kid, used to prefer knocking about with the local kids for the best part. We'd go down to the local park with a bottle of mississipi moonshine and beers for the blokes and have all manner of fun.

You may remember a young up and coming kid who played for the Roosters by the name of Andrew Savage. One night it was a bit rainy so I brought an umbrella with me, he decided it would be fun to play Mary Poppins, so he climbed up to the top of the slippery dip, opened up my umbrella and jumped off.

He landed awkardly and said he reckons he hurt his ankle. Anyway, come curfew time, he walked home from the park.

Next day, he was in hospital - he'd walked 1.5km home with a broken leg

the boys crawled under the o-bahn track rails whilst the buses went over them - but we never harmed anyone, we didn't graffiti or anything and never encountered problems. Hell, we even piled 9 people into a little renault once and drove at stupid speeds down a really steep hill and hit a log at the bottom. in hindsight we were probably lucky no one was hurt but it seemed like harmless fun at the time.

What did you get up to at 17?

If I wasn't riding my bike to my then girlfriends ( now wife ) place  ;) I was either at cricket practice, playing cricket or drinking at The Hilton afterwards. Then in winter I was at footy practice, playing footy or drinking at The Lockleys after.

I didn't get my licence until I was nearly 19 so covered miles upon miles on my pushy. Anything to get to *ahem*

Your most pertinent point FC, people are so much more angry now. I don't know if it's the pingers, the jaegers, the white spirit / energy drink mix or just society, but when I was 17 if two blokes had a blue one would get knocked down, the one left standing knew the other bloke had had enough and everyone when on with their nights. Nobody got their head stomped, stabbed, face caved in by 8 blokes etc etc.

Mind you it was beer and mull for most people and not so much of the powder/pills we see/hear about today. There has to be something in that.

With an 18 year old son and 14 year old daughter I make sure I stress the importance of walking away, get away from any conflict, don't even be a bystander. It's a scary proposition as a parent with kids in this world.

The younger generation have never been given no for answer and everyone's a winner....

Good luck being 17 in 10 years.
Personally working full time getting up at 4am but loved it.
Mum and dad separation at 15 and moving around renting until we finally got back home.
Footy,cricket and work.
Great life and know values in life.
Our society is screwed and will get worse.

The year I turned 17, I was winning a scholarship to pay my future Uni fees, chasing girls, and helping stage manage a performance of Hamlet.
I was also trying to persuade the family to let me have the motor bike my cousin offered to give me - they were probably right to knock that on the head.
I did go to the occasional party where my Ukrainian friends had home made Vodka, but i was cautious about that.
(The Uke parents tended to trust their kids and go out for the evening.)

The next year at Uni I met the girl who years later became my first wife.

When I was 17, I drank some very good beer...

1. I was with a lass, who left me for another girl... and they didn't let me watch.
2. I was in a shitty band.
3. I got kicked out of home for being an arsehole to my family.
4. I did too many drugs for my liking.
5. I went to local gigs nearly every weekend.
6. I my hobbies were beer, BBQ and getting a root.

A lot has changed since them, apart from #6... but I wouldn't mind working on #1 a little more.

When I was 17 I was innocent.

1974.

This was probably around "Number 96" on Ten?

Drying my long hair in front of the family oil heater.

The TV that you had to get up to turn over.

I would have been hustling 8 ball in the seaton hotel front bar.

Now I partner apachie in doubles and I can't sink a ball.

The cops walked in and I was ushered to the toilets.

My best mates were Causty and Batton.

There was a Gaynor.

I was driving an XM falcon with electric fan heaters.

How technologically advanced in those years.

Thanx for the memories.

PS. I am still innocent.
