ALMOST exactly one year after he got his first chance in the NBA, Australian centre Luke Schenscher is getting another.

His American agent, Brad Ames, confirmed yesterday that Schenscher would sign a 10-day contract today with the Portland Trail Blazers. Schenscher is expected to be in uniform for the weekend visit to the Los Angeles Lakers.

"I don't think they'll announce it until he signs," Ames said, "but yes, Luke will sign a 10-day with Portland."

Schenscher has been playing with Fort Worth Flyers in the NBA's D (for development) League.

The move is bad timing for the Adelaide 36ers' bid to lure Schenscher to play for his home-town team in the National Basketball League. Coach Phil Smyth had flown to the US this week to convince the 216-centimetre centre to carve a post-NBA career back home sooner rather than later.

Instead, Schenscher will resume his NBA role as a back-up centre.

The 25-year-old took a similar route to make his NBA debut last year for the Chicago Bulls. His first 10-day contract was extended to cover the Bulls' run home to the NBA play-offs. He played 20 games, averaging 7.5 minutes, 1.8 points and 1.5 rebounds.

Schenscher's bid for a second season at Chicago was cut short when the Bulls made him the last player dropped on the eve of the 2006-07 season. He had spurned a chance to be Andrew Bogut's back-up during the Boomers' world championship campaign last winter to stay in the US and enhance his opportunity to stay in the NBA.

Bogut, Australia's NBA standard bearer, has been fined $32,000 for sticking his finger up at his home crowd in Milwaukee. He has lost his coach, too, with the Bucks sacking Terry Stotts.

Bogut has averaged 12.2 points, a team-high 8.8 rebounds and three assists a game, but the Bucks have limped through an injury-ravaged season — they are last in the central division with a 23-41 record.

Another Australian in strife is Daniel Dillon, suspended indefinitely and not expected to play for the University of Arizona in its National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division tournament opener against Purdue tomorrow.

Dillon, from Melbourne, has been charged with speeding and drink-driving.

Arizona coach Lute Olsono said only that Dillon broke a team rule. Dillon declined to comment, but the university attributed this statement to its reserve guard: "I apologise to the community for my recent actions. I accept coach Olson's decision and look forward to supporting the team every way I can."

The Bucks certainly hit back hard after the Firing of Terry Stotts with a 101-90 victory over the Spurs in former Milwaukee/Chicago player Larry Krystkowiak's coaching debut. Bogut had a good game against Tim Duncan with 13 points, 12 rebounds and 6 assists.
Looks as though the Denver Nuggets could finally be hitting their straps after recent big wins over the Lakers and Suns (131-107 against the Suns). Really like the play of Denver reserves Linas Kleiza and Eduardo Najera.

and when you play with guys like Redd, Williams, Bell and Villanueva who think shot first.

Bogut is always going to struggle to be the dominant player in a side that has had the most injuries in the NBA this season.
His numbers for the season are far from a disgrace (12.2ppg @ 55% and 8.8rpg 3apg) and they are up on last year (9.4ppg 7 rpg 2.3apg) and if you look at the Total Effiecncy Rating that they use in the US he is in the Top 50.

Andrew Bogut has missed the first game of his NBA career with a foot sprain that will see him out fo the last 15 games of the season. His team mate Charlie Villanueva will also miss the rest of the season with shoulder problems.

Wouldn't that be some frontline for the future if they had Bogut, Greg Oden and Charlie Villanueva up front!!!!
If they did end up with the first pick, I do think they'd take Oden given that the other likely candidate, gun Texas freshman guard Kevin Durant, plays the same position as Michael Redd.

Interesting situation with the Knicks and the departure of Larry Brown.
Despite whatever faults Brown may have, he would have had to put up with a lot in dealing with Stephon Marbury and in particular, Isiah Thomas. Can't see too many prospective candidates wanting to coach the Knicks when they know that they have to deal with Thomas.

I'm sure he'll get it. He certainly been playing some fantastic ball.
To be fair, I perhaps haven't given him his true credit as a player in the past but the Lakers would want to add some fairly serious pieces to the puzzle if he ever want's to win a championship again.
