Great thread.
My first memories were at uni.
From recollection, 1995 was the first year Uni SA had set up a pool of computers for internet use, along with some in the library.
I was at Magill and remember looking up some footy stuff and some Hanna Barbara cartoon sites, for some reason.
I didn't get to use the 'net much, as the uni closed off open access once they'd used up the year's allotment of broadband in the first term.

I also remember I purchased a modem to attach to my computer at home in 1996, which my uncle was supposed to set up for me. He never did, so it wasn't until I started working that I came in contact with it again.
You're my only friend, and you don't even like me.

My first memory was borrowing a 2400 baud modem from high school and coming to home to use Winsock to dial into the schools net connection.

I remember when we got dial up,it was a matter of "Well we've got it,now what". The missus and I started looking up music/band stuff. As I was going through a bit of a Neil Young phase I did a search for "Young,Neil" and got a hell of a shock with the results! Trying to leave the offending site I clicked on near every link on the page. That gave me a new wallpaper and a new home page. Using my limited knowledge and in panic mode to clean the machine up before the kids got home it appeared I had managed to return all to normal only to have the "artwork" return after the next start up. Had to declare the pc out of order, remove the power cord to stop anyone turning it on before return to builder for reformat.

I was about to write my experience, then realised I was the second person to reply!

After buying my first computer in 1987, I got an Internet connection in January 1999.
I had moved to Melbourne and had to find some way of keeping up with Norwood in the SANFL.

I went for an economical, pay by the minute, dial-up plan with One-Tel.
It worked well and they just charged your credit card at the end of the cycle.
Later when One-Tel was falling over and there were rumours of charging errors, I decided it was a good Idea to "lose" my credit card and get a new one.
That turned out to have been a good move, as One-Tel went on charging customers well after they stopped delivering a service.

I was moving house then and went with BigPond dial up, then to TPG after I got sick of being told Telstra's breakdowns were due to my equipment...
Finally, I lived somewhere I could get ADSL in 2004.

My first exposure to the Internet was in 1997 when the school library set up 6 computers (all 486's) with Internet access. They were the 6 most popular computers in the school for weeks, but once the hype died down then I was a regular on there. Set up my hotmail account in 1997, and still have that account to this day!

Had dial-up at home briefly in 1998, but after that my only internet access was at Mum's, school, or uni until 2006, when I bought my own laptop and we moved to an area that had cable. When I moved out of home, I changed to wireless broadband, which sometimes is comparable to dial-up.
They don't keep me here because I'm gorgeous and 5'10

I'm pretty sure I can't talk about my first experience with the Internet.
