For a desktop, I'd pay more attention to what brand components are in it than the name on the box...
Brand may matter a little more for laptops.

I'd avoid HP for starters.

Brand name desktops tend to be a lot more expensive than getting someone like MSY build a PC for you. They'll even install the software for you for a price.

My reseller operation in Melbourne stopped selling HP anything in the early 2000s after a lot of grief with their products.
I still get systems from an OEM source in Melbourne, and tend to favour Canon Scanners and Brother printers.
(Though I have Konica Minolta colour laser myself - a 5 year old 2300W.)

That price is unbelievable in hindsight given it would have to be around $15K in today's money. You can buy a brand new car for that.

For a laptop that only needs to browse the net, basic word and Excel, watch movies and not much else where is the best place to start looking? I get the vibe from posts on threads on here that $500 is about the right price for a unit that does these basic things but when I looked at Harvey Norman a few months back I couldn't find a $500 unit. For what seemed at the basic end of the specs it was around $800. Maybe it was just that the sales guy wanted me to think it was a basic model. There weren't many cheaper options though.

Is an iPad or a Netbook the go? They also seem to be getting into the $700 range though. Are you better off to just get a proper laptop?

I'd spend 700ish on a laptop for that.

HN are rip offs.

Yes I did.
Most of our problems were with their printers but their attitude to warranty and service, or assisting resellers in trouble shooting possible warranty issues put us off.
Canon and Brother on the other hand would let our tech talk to their tech without paying for the privilege and then having to pass the cost on to the client.
