That SA side would just about be a better side than the current Australian side. It did win the Shield that season. 7 test players, an 8th Ashley Woodcock who didn't play because of Uni exams plus KG who certainly should have been a test player and John Causby who had the shots and technique but not quite the record to play test.

Whilst on the subject of Footballers playing another sport
Robert Oatey had an interesting decision to make in about 1961
Football or Tennis ?
Oatey was quite a junior tennis player
Oatey and Gary Usher became a formidable doubles combination

There was a junior tennis game played in the summer of 60-61
Semi Final doubles championship
Robert Oatey + Gary Usher v Rodney Brant and this guy called John Newcombe
They lost, but what might have been
Oatey and Usher led 5-3 on serve to win this match
It has been said that Usher cracked under pressure on service and produced a run of double faults
They lost 8-10

Legendary Tennis man Harry Hopman was impressed with Oatey , and wanted Oatey to pursue a Tennis career
Oatey at the time had college commitments

That Oatey had a long and successful SANFL playing career most probably vindicated his decision to become a footballer
And maybe Newk and his mate winning had something to do with that decision !

STANLEY LEWIS
Was a SANFL Administrator from 1950-1961
Lewis passed away in 1961
Played 30 games for SA 1926-1927
Had the notion to aMALgamate the 8 clubs into 4 clubs during the 2WW years
Has been described as a very forward sort of an administrator

In 1962 the SANFL introduced the Stanley H Lewis Club Trophy in his honour
That award was for the top SANFL rated club in all 4 divisions at the time
League
Seconds
Thirds
Colts

The winning clubs in the 1960s were

1962 PA
1963 PA
1964 PA
1965 NW
1966 NA
1967 NA
1968 ST
1969 GL

I would have thought ST would have won a few more in the 1966-1969 period

Stanley Lewis Trophy 1962-2010
12 PA
11 NW
8 GL
6 NA
5 CD
4 ST
2 WWT
1 SA

NW holds the most consecutive wins in a row at 4
NW have achieved that feat twice
1984-1987
1995-1998

The points allocations these days are
100 League
50 seconds
50 Under 18s

Sturt were not usually the dominant team during the minor round during their golden years. North was definitely minor premier in 1967, I think that Glenelg were in 1969 and Port in 1970. Jack Oatey had the knack of timing his run to perception so that the Double Blues peaked at Grand Final time.

It would be interesting to compare Stanley H Lewis trophies to premierships won since the inception of the Lewis trophy. I am sure it will highlight that Norwood, Glenelg and North have underachieved in the last 50 years given the talent they have had at their disposal.

Eagles 2
Glenelg 3
North 4
Norwood 5
Port 16

If we include the retrospective trophies I collated in here:

Port 23
South 1
Sturt 8
West 3
Torrens 1

I have a vague memory of Robert Oatey's brother Peter Oatey (I think that was his name - he wore # 8) being a very good tennis player. I remember he gave up his football career to concentrate more on tennis.

Peter Oatey I reckon wore the number 8 guernsey in the latter part of his career ?
He is listed in 1966 as wearing the 11 guernsey
And yes 200KW , Peter was also a Tennis Player
Im not sure how Peter's tennis career panned out

OATEY FAMILY
Jack, Robert and Peter were all rovers
The only assessment I can make on who was the best player in the family is that Robert was better than Peter
Jack has a superior coaching record than Robert
Whilst Jack and Roberts careers as players and coaches is well documented, little is said about Peter
On the occasions I saw Peter he was a good reliable rover
The Oateys appear to have played a combined 533 games for the NW football club ? [can Redleg Hawk confirm]
232 Robert 1961-1973
181 Jack 1940-1952
120 Peter 1965-1972

I asked my dad, who was a good judge and a very fair man who was the better footballer, Bob or Jack and he said "Definitely Bob".

I know that it was only one neutral supporter but it is all I can go on.

Bob might have been a better player than Peter, but Peter is a neurosurgeon, a fact that should mean that he is held in awe.

AISH
Also had 3 footballers play at NW
Peter Aish played 152 games between 1953-1962
Peter has been mentioned in this thread as a very good player at full back when he played that position
Peters sons Andrew and Michael have also played at the club

The Oatey and Aish families have produced 3 footballers form each family at the Parade
Both families in total have played 500+ games for NW

I need some clarification
The Aish family has played 558 games compared to the Oateys 539 ?

Other multiple family names at the parade that have played 300+ games , include
Woodcock
Warhurst ?
Gallagher
Fosdike ?

I've been doing lots of reseach lately on the 1880s and there is an Oatey that keeps turning up there. He played for North Adelaide (the one that disbanded in 1885 not the current one) and Adelaide. Be interesting to find out if he is related. He'd be the right era I think to be Jack's grandfather.

Would the Dalwood's have got close. We now have the third generation of Dalwoods as well.

The Warhursts would certainly had played more than 300 games between Tom senior and junior with a handful from John thrown in.

The James family would have player 300+ between them, albeit they were brothers and no previous generations (that I know of) are included.

Wonder how many Pat and John Hall got to?

Yes. I realise what you are saying LL. I have seen the Oatey name as well in 1880s reports. Given that Bob's son David certainly played league as well, if we can prove that the Oatey in the 1880s was a direct descendant that would be a staggering 5 generations in a row, provided that my thoughts regarding Ted Oatey are also correct.

Many of those players weren't playing in the 60's AH so I was reluctant to mention the Thomas brothers.
Between them they would've played a few.

I put those others in because posters had asked about some of them. Are you talking about Keith and Greg Thomas? They weren't brothers.
