O'Brien was great In the first game. Heberle was better over the two games. Whoever put in Big Nik as third best after his comical performance wasn't watching the game. Discrace to the APFL, VFC and himself.

arrived from bali at 6am,drove to Jamestown as he had to play,didnt do to bad in the first game but could see he didn't want to be there,during the break got some treatment in the rooms and in the second just looked tired,wasnt interested in leading for the ball and was taken off,sat on the bench by himself,at the end couldn't get out quick enough,just looked tired and a little fed up with it all,like a child sitting at the table told to eat his veg when he dosent like veg,The yorke and the northern were looking for players still Thursday night talking to there officals Saturday.

In hindsight, I'm probably a little harsh given his flight in that morning. However, for what ever reason he was picked to play. I've never known anyone so tired they couldn't lead or chase after they have put on a guernsey and just gone on the ground.

It was disappointing to travel so far to see the best we have only to have some (not all though) treat it as a joke. It was embarrassing to sit amongst other players and ex players whom I know (and they know me) from NAFA an NEFL laughing at our endeavour on the ball - and sadly, it was that obvious even before the second game when we were up against a team that wanted to win. We'll never know if we were good enough.

For players such as Heberle, Montgomerie, O'Brien, Bruggamann, Michael and a heap of others who battled on, it must have been a let down, although I didn't hear that personally.

I understand the frustration on the rules and the "what's in it for me" attitude. It's all through this forum. Having to play two games and travelling more than half an hour etc... If you want to change the rules, talk to your club. It was brought in by them and they can change it by majority.

I think that if you're not man enough to want to do it, you should be at least man enough to say 'no thanks' and let your club know in advance because you'll miss the following week. Then you can have a extra planned holiday

Exactly!! There are plenty of gun players in this league that want to play assoc footy. By picking only these players, you will find that after a few years clubs and supporters may get a little assoc pride back and start going to & supporting these games. At the moment a lot of people resent assoc games because when there stars, such as Big Nik refuse, there home club loses them thru suspension the following wk. Thus creating a lot of resentment towards assoc footy which is a shame. Take away the heavy handed approach & the guys that want to play will eventually bring back the prestige to these games & over time we will find more people wanting to get involved.

It's the State of Origin argument. Without the best players, then lets not bother. I'd just prefer to see a match with players having a dip, rather than a few squealing about the rules as some sort of excuse on why they played liked chumps.
It's hard not to be critical when so many volunteers, coaches, staff and officials work endless hours to put on a showcase event and a few treat it like a joke because the silver spoon was cold. Jamestown and the NAFA deserved better from us.

This is a never ending argument obviously people have different opinions and always will. There will be players that want to play and players that don't. You may have to drop the standard of footy to find a team full of players who are hungry to play tho... Personally I believe it's a wasted week to make the officials feel good about the league and they should get some reward they do put In hard work through out the year.... But the players, suck it up if you don't get picked great you can have the week off no suspension. If you do, you already have to make te effort to drive there and 'waste' your Saturday, association is the type of footy where you earn alot of respect from 2 games with 20 minute halfs. You might aswell put in and play the best of your ability to let people know your really what your reputation suggests ( to the people that get selected on that) or even make a reputation for yourself....
Different opinions all round. The only thing that matters is they won't get rid of the rule it's still in as of now so we have to deal with it, your respected clubs and your clubs players.

The league should relax the rule. and you will get blokes who want to play. a high number of players enjoy a week off of footy to recover and give the body a rest. the whole day is a bit of a joke how can you compare against other leagues when they are no where near putting their strongest sides on the park eg. Yorke peninsula. either make every league compulsory for players to play or relax the rule. As for the zone squad selections , half of the names called out didnt even play in the association. so it just seems as a really pointless day to me. Why dont the APFL play just one full game against another league and thats it.

I can't beleive people are bagging Big Nik. The rules say you must be available to play and he was and did. This is what happens when the rules are enforced so tightly. Next year I will be expecting people with sore ankles or dodgy hammys to say they are available (this being not suspended), turn up to play and come off the ground injured after a couple of minutes without being involved in a contest. This is what players need to do to escape suspension.
I guess the saddest part is that all we talk about is people getting suspended over this every year and not the footy. The whole weekend is about how can you escape getting suspended.

Easy fix is to make it voluntary, you will still get a competitive side on the park and everyone will bust their balls.

Another idea to get some passion back into these games could be to make association weekend "association of origin". Players come back to play for the league where they played their juniors from all over the state, the crowds will enjoy it more seeing blokes they havn't seen play for years and the players would enjoy playing with blokes they grew up with and having a few froffies after the game.

While $150 would be nice for those that play, I think the players that would be most appreciative would be the ones that aren't really playing for the $$$. The reality is, $150 wouldn't change the attitude of the ones that need changing, as its probably only a fraction of what they would usually earn on a Saturday afternoon.

This year is the first year we have seen the rule backfire on the association, and i think it will happen more and more in future unless something is changed. I think the league should look at age classes. For instance, association should be compulsory for players under a certain age, e.g. 28 years old (???). Then I think it should be up to clubs to nominate those players outside of this age class, e.g. those >28 years old (??), that are keen to play and hence put their name up for selection. This would ensure that the team is filled mostly of young players that still have a chance of playing at a higher level, but also enables those older players to be involved but doesn't penalise those older players that would prefer a week off. Lets be honest those good enough at 28 years old have probably already represented the league in previous years anyway.

I thought the day in Jamestown was great. It was a great opportunity to play along side the blokes that your up against ever week. This has helped build a respect between players in the league. It might even take a bit of spite out of games.

Well done to the Hamley crew who were best on after 6pm. Earl a close second.

I think the worse thing is the guys like Pearson, Leighton & Howell who enjoy playing at that next level miss out and blokes like Herble, Seccafien, Clements & Hardiman spend the day on pine or out of position. These blokes wanna play rep footy so pick them because at the end of the day u won't win if your best players don't care. Think Andy Michaels selections have proven that ya don't need the big names to win if there not interested.
