Adam Goodes has been awarded the honour.

Good move or political correctness gone mad?

I think Goodes has had better years, but an excellent choice.

I'd say he's the first Australian of the year to have bullied a 13 year old girl in his year of excellence.

A great choice but I'd rather these announcements be made around the day that should be Australia Day, January 1.

Terrific role model, uses his position for good, does work for young kids and teenagers getting them an education and jobs. Does he deserve aussie of the year, I don't know. Do I care, NO! The man is a legend, and someone my daughter amd myself can look up to! Great work Goodesy!

That's the best case for an alternative date I've heard suggested - the date of Federation.
I've been resistant to moving it just to appease a minority of agitators but this offers a positive, and not just a negative, reason to make the change.
Perhaps constitutional recognition of indigenous Australians could be timed to fit with that day and make a real united Australia Day and a fresh start.

I'm not convinced any entertainer - sports or pop star - should be Australian of the Year though.
EPIGENETICS - Lamarck was right!

The fact is that 80% of Goodes write up was about him shaming a 13 year old girl with learning disabilities on national television tells me that no he didn't bloody deserve it!

Thing that gets me about Australian of the year awards is why is it always leading sportsmen?

Now don't get me wrong I'm a self proclaimed sports addict but I just can't get over the 'Australian of the year' always being a sportsmen.

Look at the natural disaster's we had this year was Fighting fires, helping the injured or aiding those who lost everything. Then there are the doctors and service workers and the hours they do.

If we were going to go a sportsmen gee what Crawford did raising well over a million dollars nearly brought a tear to my eye.

Anyway that's my view on this.
you've gota keep on keep'n on .........

It was Goodes efforts away from the field that earned him the title, if he was white there would be no fuss from the rednecks.
He's an outstanding role model and mentor for all young Australians and is am inspiration. I salute him.

well said. and anyone suggesting that it wasnt a brave and courageous move for him to stand up against racism is just ubsurd.

now whether he should be australian of the year is another matter. i do agree that sportspeople are over represented, but in terms of recent sportspeople, i do think he is one of the more deserving ones.

would like to see some prominent scientists more appropriately recognised one of these days.
