5aa is a perfect example of that. You can tell that Rowey is told to try and come up with some left field ideas etc, and always act as a counterpoint to the more rational McDermott. Im sure there are plenty of topics that Rowey is trying to argue that he doesnt even agree with, but the point is to generate a debate and get people to listen and call in etc.

I've heard Rowe try and be analytical in one sentence ( and he can be quite knowledgeable on the game ) and then he tries to be some sort of Rex Hunt-clone in the next.

He would gain much more respect if he just stuck to calling/talking about the game and dropped his "Keeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer bang!" type rubbish. Too late now as he's paid to be the class clown.

As a crows fan, when it is a very close game, Rowey can almost be the best caller in the game, because his excitement and passion take over.

But as a result, that is now what he is known for, and so it just comes off looking like he is the class clown when the game doesnt warrant that sort of emotion.

I think there's a general expectation that commentators shouldn't be biased - I hear English cricket supporters (and some Aussies) criticising Australian commentators about their bias all of the time. It's good to have unbiased commentary, because you know the commentators are going to tell you the truth about your team, not sound like a happy clapping chimp.
And the fact that they are broadcasting to SA only is not an excuse. What, no supporters of non-SA clubs listens to 5AA? Or how about the Port supporters who need to listen to him? It's not just broadcast to SA, it's online.

Ed TV was a gimmick, which is fine. Rowey's commentary is every week.

It definitely depends on your target audience. And you don't cater for the minority, you cater for the majority. Given their ratings they clearly think it is the way to go too.

I'm not necessarily saying he should be biased so that there is no critical analysis of the club, and at least from my perspective I don't think he does that, or at least tries not to. He certainly barracks for them though, and that's what I find acceptable rather than blinded bias. Hope I am making sense.

And for the record I think he does the same towards port when he commentates them.

Absolutely, it's the manufactured emotion that turns me off. The genuine enthusiasm, character and foibles of people like Lou Richards, Ian Day and Rabs is/was fantastic. That's why I'm not a fan of BT either, because I think he could be really good with his natural personality and enthusiasm, but thinks he has to try to be something else.

James Brayshaw, all clichés.

Bruce gives me the sh!ts too. Not McAvaney. Abernethy.

Richo has surprised me, don't mind Ling, Harley and Matthews.

Have always liked Huddo, but perhaps that goes back to the old 3AW days where, to me, he seemed like the straight-man - he'd call the footy, leave the buffoonery to Rex, and the special comments and footy insight to Barassi, Newman, etc.

I've never heard him give any indication he's a North supporter though he seems to know James Brayshaw pretty well which stems from his time at Claremont-Nedlands Cricket Club in the WACA.

That probably reinforces my point about him having no bias!
