Simonds Stadium’s Stage 4 redevelopment is officially underway, with demolition of the Brownlow and Jennings Stands beginning this week.

Geelong Cats chief executive Brian Cook and Minister for Sport John Eren this morning marked the start of construction works that will increase the stadium’s capacity to 36,000.

The state government contributed $75 million to the project while the City of Greater Geelong made a $6 million contribution and the AFL and Geelong Cats, $4 million each.

The new stand, which is due for completion by May 2017, will house new facilities including a large 600 seat function room, media and broadcasting areas, football department facilities and a social club for patrons on match days.

The Stage 4 redevelopment will also include the ‘Sunrise Centre’, a facility aiming at getting people with a disability back to work.

Simonds Stadium already hosts Melbourne Victory A-league outings and will soon welcome the West Indies and Melbourne’s Big Bash teams for a festival of cricket. The City of Greater Geelong will also bid for more events once the redevelopment is complete.

During the peak of construction, approximately 90 extra jobs are expected to be created within the stadium.
PAFC. Forever.

Neccessary to stop the bullshit like what happened this year.

Didn't north Melbourne throw their last minor round game this year in order to guarantee an away final in Melbourne rather than in Adelaide? They won't stop that sort of bullshit happening.

If North won their last minor round game, they would've played the Western Bulldogs in the first week of finals.
Adelaide gave up any hope of a home final when they lost their game with Geelong.

Crows played the following day, North Melbourne losing to Richmond closed the door on a push for the double chance. Point is kangaroos had a choice of winning and possibly playing interstate or losing and being assured a final in Melbourne.
If I were the coach of North Melbourne I know what may instructions would have been.

Essendon, Collingwood & Carlton wouldn't have played at Kardinia Pk since the 80's.

Essendon's last game at Kardinia Park was Round 21, 1993.
Carlton's last game at Kardinia Park was Round 20, 1997. (then known as Shell Stadium)
Collingwood's last game at Kardinia Park was Round 15, 1999. (also Shell Stadium)

There's also a stage 5 development after the 36k mark is reached. The Cats have put in 15 million so far.

The AFL are considering a Monday night fixture in round 23, most probably Adelaide v West Coast. They are also looking at scheduling the first game of the finals series on the Thursday night.

Yeah quite possibly. They do want to rid the competition of resting players in the final round though. Finals Wild Card games might not be too far in the future.

Monday night has been tried and it failed, Thursday night is an excellent TV time slot but I think it's "meh" when it's your team at home.

If they are programmed around school holidays I think that would be extremely beneficial for crowd numbers, adults will still go, but adults with younger school age children in the middle of winter might baulk at the idea a little.
