Bye rounds are a cruel beast. Bottom knocks off top. If only the Hawkers named Williams as an emergency they would have got the win.

18 Greedy Guns 2 9 22517 22982 97.98 8

The Guns have done it! A massive boilover in Division III as bottom beats top. This result put the Summer of George back in their usual spot, that is, on top of the ladder. Most of the other leading teams had a good weekend with the notable exception of the Spankers. Ice Bank Mice Elf were sitting in third spot but after a total wipeout loss against Georgie boy sending my love down the well is all the way down to number 10. OUCH.

Wadey's Warriors had been in good form in recent weeks but the first bye week match put a stop to that as the Magpie Mafia continued on with their winning ways. This result combined with wins to Chicken Noodles and Blighty Teasdale saw those sides clamber into the top eight..at least for now. Pretty close in this league.

Northern Cats managed to rack up another win and all of a sudden FOOTYLEDGENS are starting to look like a third relegation in four seasons could be on the cards so Cubby in a bit of bother. Greedy Guns pulled off the big win as mentioned earlier but they still trail the Cub by two games and still have all the work ahead of them to avoid the drop.

Summer of George moved one game clear at the top of the ladder after dealing a decisive blow against previously second ranked Hawkers in the Division III match of the round last weekend. The Hawkers fell to fourth spot as the Wombats and the Shineboners recorded victories in the second of the bye week rounds. Shiatsu Shiners were the big winners as The Willies were feeling a little deflated after their loss as the Shineboners snaffled the Willies' top four spot.

Ice Bank Mice Elf are back into the top eight after the Spankers, um, Spanked Blighty Teasdale who fell out of the top eight in a manner that would have served the Woodpeckers proud. Chicken Noodles went cold this week as well after they were swamped by Wadeys Warriors who got a league high (and one of the highest scores in the Hogg) 1990 which proved too much for the Noods.

At the bottom of the ladder Greedy Guns made it two on the trot as they cleaned up fellow cellar dwellers OneWinWonders. Things finally went Right for Right Nut who tightened up with a massive win over an unconvincing Chelsea FC. FOOTYLEDGENS earned themselves some invaluable breathing space as they accounted for a formerly in form Magpie Mafia who must have called Nathan Buckley for advice last week.

There is a saying in fantasy football that the bye rounds sort out the men from the boys. At the start of the bye period it was almost anyone's guess which teams would make the eight but after the byes the situation looks a lot clearer. Seven of the top eight from last week won their match on the weekend in what has turned out to be the lowest scoring round of the byes. The big loser was Ice Bank Mice Elf who were flogged by the Wombats. The Spankers slipped out of the top eight after the Chicken Noodles proved to be too hot for FOOTYLEDGENS.

The only other side out of the eight apart from Noodles who won were the Northern Cats who have now won four of their past five matches. After their slow start it is hard to see the Catters making a late bid as they are still two games behind the Noodles. Another problem for Andy is that the teams in the eight all appear to be in pretty good form. Blighty Teasdale can't seem to quite get into the eight as the Hawkers pulled out of a form slump which saw them lose top spot.

The Noodles still have some work to do to grab that last spot with Blighty and the Spankers the best bet to challenge but neither of these sides can stay in the eight so it could be Chicken Noodles with the Cup....but they've got to keep steaming on to get to the finals.

Summer of George and Killer Wombats not only identified themselves as premiership contenders but quite possibly they have identified this week's beaten foes as premiership pretenders. The Willies look good earlier in the season but in recent weeks their earlier form has not been evident. The Willies have dropped in the colder weather and they are half mast hoping for a quick turn around so that they can go up again. The Hawkers were another early season bolter but they've also had their tallons clipped in recent weeks. The Hawkers are now down to sixth and it is these two sides that those teams outside the eight will have their eye on in the next three rounds.

Keeping your eye out is one thing but what happens when you get absolutely ambushed? Blighty Teasdale must be wondering what hit him after the OneWinWonders went BANG and pulled out a mighty 2359 that sent Blighty sprawling on the canvas. Where the hell did that one come from? It was an invaluable win there for the OneWins as the relegation bunfight is incredibly tight. Last placed Greedy Guns got rolled by Right Nut who managed to go up four spots after that result. However, Greedy Guns aren't quite out of this league just yet. With a heap of teams on 5-9 BigShow just needs to start collecting the Ws and they could get out of jail here. Two teams that don't look like it at the moment are Wacky Tigers and Chelsea who both look cooked at this level.

In Golf they have this shit called 'Moving Day'. I think it refers to the third day of a Golf tournament and is roughly the equivalent to the premiership quarter. When the dust settles on this comp Round 15 might be the round that could be considered Moving Day due to the amount of upsets and a couple of key results in the middle of the table that have kept the finals door open for the Spankers and Blighty.

The upsets would have made a Pakistani Cricketer look twice. Right Nut has been scoring well for the majority of the year but not getting the wins and Summer of George has been doing it on the bit as they have for the majority of their Hogg career. Then out of nowhere WHACK the Bluebaggers home by 111. Even more remarkable was the win over relegation threatened stragglers OneWinWonders who pulled off a shock boilover (is there any other kind Lt McAfferty?) over the Killer Wombats who must have been lost in the bush or something. These results were gold for the Shineboners who would be a lot happier than your average Shinboner at the present time.

In the middle of the ladder the Hawkers arrested their form slump and the Magpie Mafia copped a solid flogging not handed out since the good old days of St Kilda Police Station. Meanwhile, Chicken Noodles and The Willies got the wobbles by losing eight point games against their nearest rivals on the ladder and both are now under threat. Looking at scoring patterns I'd be on the Noodles and the Spankers to get those last two spots.

At the arse end I reckon Greedy Guns (despite winning some games of late), Chelsea and the Wacky Tiggers are all GAWN. Meanwhile OneWinWonders has the Northern Cats and FOOTYLEDGENS looking very nervous. Stay tuned sports fans...

With only one round to play nothing has been decided yet in what has been incredibly tight Division III this season. Two teams can win the minor premiership with the Shineboners looking very sharp indeed as they keep the heat on the perennial Minor Premiers Summer of George. History suggests Georgie boy will do it again.

The double chance is up in the air as well. Hawkers had a bit of a mid season slump but in recent weeks they have returned to form with a vengeance. They won this weekend by over 200 points against the Chicken Noodles who look to be trying very hard to throw away a top eight spot with both hands. The problem for Hawkers is that the Killer Wombats bounced back to form with another side trying to throw away a top eight spot in The Willies. Wadey's Warriors have been on the warpath (geddit) for some weeks now and it's hard to see them losing next week so perhaps that mini slump the Hawkers had could cost them a double chance next month.

As mentioned above, The Willies and Chicken Noodles have got the wobbles. However, their immediate challengers in the Spankers and Blighty Teasdale have been unable to nail down 8th spot all season. The collective failure of those four teams in recent weeks has somehow left the door open for Right Nut who looked to be facing relegation not so long ago. Extend the Dukes and even 13th ranked FOOTYLEDGENS are still a chance of making the eight but obviously the further down you are the more needs to go right next week.

Then there is the relegation battle. The two most out of form sides at the moment are Chelsea and Wacky Tigers and I think they'll both go down but a win could see them escape. Amazingly, last placed Greedy Guns can still avoid relegation even though they have a 4-12 record. It's all set up for the Guns next week...they play out of form Northern Cats while the other relegation threatened teams all have tough assignments to finish the season. If Right Nut make the eight and the Greedy Guns avoid the drop both feats would have to rank alongside the all time great escapes in Hogg history. Everyone has something to play for next week in a top finish to what has been an excellent league so far this season.

A 3 point loss with points wasted on the bench was hard to watch this round. I'm hoping to make the great escape this weekend.

It could be the 1956 Hotham Handicap as they lunge for the line to make the eight.

Division III is not the highest ranked league in the Hogg this season but I reckon it's the best league in Hogg history in terms of competitiveness. If the AFL could order a league I reckon it would look a bit like this one. Nothing was decided until round 17 had been completed. Summer of George continued with their run of Minor Premierships when they defeated second ranked ShiatsuShiners fairly easily in the end. The magnitude of that result must be a worry for the Shiners' premiership chances as they have to get by Georgie boy to win this one.

Fellow contender Killer Wombats had a very strong finish to a very strong season when they put paid to high scoring Right Nut's (ha ha) chances of a dramatic eleventh hour entry into the finals race. The Wombats looked primed to graduate from Divvy III and start moving into the big leagues. Wadeys Warriors have gained strength steadily in the second half of the year but they held on to their top four spot despite losing Spankers by a mere four points. It was tough luck for the Spankers because Blighty Teasdale smashed the bottom side Chelsea and they leaped frogged them into the top eight OUCH. The Hawkers dropped the ball against Extend the Dukes which cost them a top four spot while Magpie Mafia qualified for the top eight for a second straight season at this level. FOOTYLEDGENS were a bit like Extend the Dukes and the Spankers, finishing the season with a win but missing out. The Willies after a bright start lost their way and drooped considerably as the season went on so a disappointing finish for them.

Normally the glory goes to the finalists when you write up the last round but this week it's all about the mighty Greedy Guns. After 10 rounds the Big Show was batting like the Big Show in Test cricket sitting a sorry arsed 1-9. Then along came the byes and all of a sudden BigShow went into World Cup mode with some brilliant wins and an unlucky loss against a top side along the way. The result was that Greedy Guns went from their normal 18th rank all the way up to a season high 14th in what ranks as the greatest escape in Hogg Shield history. I'll have to laugh if he gets relegated next season though.

So that leaves the dearly departed. Northern Cats seemed to be scratched pretty early but bared their claws briefly over the bye period before having another Cat nap while Woollballs didn't get warm and Wacky Tigers and Chelsea looked like lame ducks a long way home despite a deceiving win-loss record.

Let's hope this ends the slide for the Greedy Guns. In 2013 we were in div 1. Time to climb back up.

Finals Week 1

Qualifying Final
Wadey's Warriors 2477
Summer of George 2331

Qualifying Final
ShiatsuShiners 2313
Killer Wombats 2311

Elimination Final
Blighty Teasdale 2290
Hawkers 2208

Elimination Final
Chicken Noodles 2323
Magpie Mafia 2282

After the minor round that was, this week's finals in Division III were hardly going to be hum-drum affairs that went to script. Top scoring Wadeys Warriors defeated the Minor Premiers Summer of George to secure a promotion to Hogg Divsision II after they won their final quite convincingly. In the other Qualifying Final, ShiastuShiners held on to win by a mere two points to join Wadeys Warriors in Division II next season. A dropped mark DOH!

In the knockout finals Blighty Teasdale upset 5th ranked Hawkers to somehow remain in contention. Scoring patterns suggest that he won't be too far off the mark for his Semi against Summer of George either so quite a comeback there by the Warriorpeckers. Meanwhile, the Division III finals proved to be to tough for Magpie Mafia who have now slipped to a 0-3 record in finals at this level. Dare we say the Colliwobbles at work?
