Hope you got a piece of that Box Trifecta last week - $385 on UBET … “Noice”
Underwood Stakes Day in Melbourne – now we’re ‘gearing up’ for the Spring Carnival! This race day has always been the ‘opening’ of the Spring, for me.
The weather has cleared (I’ve spent the last 5 days in Halls Gap & there wasn’t a cloud in the sky when we left this morning. Should be a nice sunny day @ Caulfield tomorrow & although a number of pundits suggested the inside was ‘off’ last week – Lee Freedman suggested otherwise on the Sunday Morning show on Racing.com - so should 'play fair' all day.
Good quality races in Sydney too tomorrow. Weather & track look good too. Their Carnival starts to get serious now too – Lovin’ It!
OK, to this week…
Lots of races & horses to bet on means prices should be good for most runners.
Caulfield Race 7 – The Rupert Clarke
I’m astounded there doesn’t seem to be much love in the market for the ‘Toppy’ in this race - Under the Louve. Record at the Track & Distance is bloody good. I know he’s only won 2 of 10 at the track, but he’s only been unplaced once! I’ve taken the E/Way Price of $9 & $3 & I’m happy if he drifts in the market tomorrow – I’ll bet again! I reckon he’s a PLACE special in this race tomorrow & the 2/1 is (to use a ‘Brucism’) “… delicious”. 1 x 3 Units
Box Trifecta: 1, 4, 6, 7, 10, 11
Caulfield Race 8 – The Underwood
1st ‘real’ WFA distance race for the Spring.
The 9 furlongs is an awkward distance to bet with confidence – it’s not the classic mile & it’s not the mile & a ¼ … Thanks Captain Obvious! But, IMHO it makes it difficult to punt because the 2000 to 2400m horses don’t have the early enough ‘finish’ (particularly at Caulfield) to win it generally & the ‘Milers’ struggle to finish off the last 100m. Which often means an unlikely winner emerges late to win the race. The Weight for Age conditions also ‘trick us’ when looking to the Turnbull, Cox Plate & McKinnon Stakes races in a few weeks.
So in terms of my ‘strategy’ in this race I’m looking at a ‘Mile type / Leader. Awesome Rock looks very well placed to me. Gets a ‘cosy run’ & should finish off the race. Unfortunately, he’s too short for me to back him with any significant bet – I’ll take him win only – Ladbrokes Odds Boost at $8.
I am having an E/Way ‘saver’ on He or She – I’m concerned about the last 100m but Williams might just get an easy ride for much of the race from the barrier & if he can ‘kick’ on the turn, then he might just hold on. I’m hoping that The Cleaner sets a strong tempo in the race, if He or She can get a soft run, the he might just get up.
As far as the ‘stayers’ & looking to The Turnbull – I’m keen to see if Tarzino can ‘come up’ this Spring after winning the Derby last year. I also think Lucia Valentina is a genuine winner of this race tomorrow – you know she’s too short for me to back her at 35/10 but I would not be surprised at all to see her win comfortably. Good Race, but difficult to get a ‘value runner’. Small E/Way on He or She; 1 x 4 & the Win bet on Awesome Rock at the price.
Box Trifecta: 2, 5, 6, 7, 11
Caulfield Race 5 – The Tranquil Star
I’ve had a real roughie in this race – No. 13 Inspired Estelle.
Think she needed the run last start & if you look at her 2yr old form, she’s a better horse than what she showed. Joel Marshall’s tipped her to improve & I like horses trained by Mick Price & ridden by ‘Froggy’ Newitt when they run at their home track (i.e. where they’re trained) $26 & $6.50 on Sports bet is good but $35 & & $9 on UBet is better – took that price 1 x 3 with a smallish outlay. Happy with 3rd ☺
Back to Rosehill, in Sydney tomorrow. General rule of thumb is look for well drawn runners in sprint races, due to the ‘shute’ at the 1200m & back horses that have won at the track.
Rosehill Race 7 – The Golden Pendant
Difficult Race to dissect here. Think 8, 5 & 9 go forward & First Seal gets a ‘sit’ 1 out 3 back, with Pearls on its inside. 10 probably has to push forward too & hopefully puts the pressure on up front. 2 & 6 go back.
I’m backing the 6 here – Ammriata, 1 x 4. Good 1st up record, good track & distance record. The 20/1 is nice for a bit of a punt.
Box Trifecta: 1, 2, 5, 6, 9
Rosehill Race 8 – The Shannon Stakes
With the scratching of Counterattack, this doesn’t look like a very strong race IMHO.
On that basis alone, one would argue that Entirely Platinum has a good chance at winning – but is he the horse he was this time last year?
Not sure. I think on his best form he wins here, but not sure if he is currently at his best.
I assume he’s going to The Epsom?
He’s won 2 of 4 starts at the track & from the gate, he just leads – doesn’t he? The $8 for the win is ‘overs’ IMHO. I
f he gets an easy time up front, then I think he goes very close to winning – the horse is prone to narrow losses & didn’t race well last start. 2 more starts (including tomorrow’s), then spelled? Or if he were to win tomorrow (or run really well in The Epsom, do they take him back to Melbourne for a run in the McKinnon Stakes on the last day of the VRC Carnival???
What about Hi World?
Perhaps the one to beat but both at the price & the ‘quality’, I’ll back the Hawkes runner.
I could go on more guys, but I am literally falling sleep as I type this, due to a massive week & workload, at work this week, Sorry.
Enjoy your day on the punt – I’m probably spending it at the Arkaba with my Laptop & Best Bets in hand. Lets hope we all have some more winners, eh?
