The season will consist of six minor round matches, with all games to be played as double-headers at either Coopers Stadium or City Mazda Stadium.

A highlight will be the round four double-header to be held at The Parade as a curtain-raiser to Adelaide’s AFL Women’s clash with Brisbane.

SANFL CEO Jake Parkinson said it was a great opportunity for the inaugural players and clubs to make their mark on the competition.

The season will culminate in a twilight grand final on Saturday 1st April at Peter Motley Oval, between the top two teams on the ladder.

SANFL is proud to partner with Statewide Super for the inaugural Women’s League.

Statewide Super CEO Richard Nunn said Statewide Super was excited to be the major sponsor of the SANFL Women’s League.

“As South Australia’s local industry fund we’re proud to support local initiatives, and we’re particularly proud of a partnership that supports women playing their chosen sport at a professional level,” Mr Nunn said.

Entry to all Women’s League matches will be free, with plenty of family friendly activities.

Is it just me or does the term "blockbuster" get grossly overused nowadays? Come to think of it... what exactly is a blockbuster?

THE SANFL has ushered in a new era on Tuesday morning, officially launching its new women’s league at a function at Adelaide Oval.

The league, which kicks off at The Parade on Friday night, comes as the SANFL this year marks 140 years of league football.

“These are exciting times for women in football,” SANFL chief executive Jake Parkinson said. “It’s a historic day in the evolution of the SANFL.

“SANFL has a commitment to provide more opportunities for young women with the new league providing the necessary stepping stone for those aspiring to the elite AFLW level.”

The four teams in the SANFL women’s league are Norwood, North Adelaide, Glenelg and West Adelaide.

Friday night’s double header at Norwood — in which all four teams will be on display — begins at 6pm. Entry is free.

This is all well and good but I'll never understand why the SANFL has gone down this road when a womens football league was already operating in SA. Surely they could have endorsed it even "merged" with it lets say. I just dont think the numbers and depth is there for another competition at the moment.

AWFL would be a more suitable acronym for this joke of a competition.

Let them play to their hearts content in suburban leagues, but seriously, top billing in the sports page of the Advertiser and all the other national papers. Give me a break !

Name me one other sport in the world where such poorly skilled and inexperienced players get so much media exposure.
Purely an AFL marketing exercise and propaganda exercise.

Compare this to the lack of acknowledgement that lads running around in the SANFL reserves get who clearly have 10 X the amount of talent.

Just loved seeing players that lined up for SAFC in our U16 Women's premiership team now playing for other clubs as there are only 4 sides...

Suffering from the usual February football withdrawal, and mildly drawn to the novelty, I shall be in attendance tonight.

The chance to patronise some of Norwood's public houses first is also a drawcard. 8)

Mind you, if the standard of the games is anything like those of the AFL-run competition, a visit to the public houses will be a necessity...

And why would they call something they are trying to build up after a bomb!!

http://blog.dictionary.com/blockbuster/

"The linguistic origins of the blockbuster are fittingly militaristic, since so many such movies are themselves concerned with gun battles, explosions, and other things that go boom. The first blockbusters were bombs, specifically bombs that were able to bust an entire block."

Yes, very much so. The Colonist is always a winner, and the old Norwood on the corner ain't too bad either. That thing that used to be the Oriental, you stick that one in the bottom drawer. Same for the Alma, about as much character as two-minute noodles.

Don't patronise them too much though, they get their nose out of joint pretty easy out east. ;)
