Ask Spelly - version 2018

Postby Footy Chick » Thu Apr 19, 2018 11:00 am

Hi Spelly

I'm guessing the Port v Eagles game in Rd 2 must feature some interesting stats.

2.1 Q1 0.1
2.2 Q2 0.5
2.3 Q3 0.10
4.4 Q4 2.16

How many clubs have managed to draw or win a game by only kicking goals in the last quarter of a game for a start...

There are two that come to mind - the match in 1909 where Port beat Norwood with the only goal in the last quarter and the 1919 Grand Final, where Sturt kicked three goals to win 3.5 to North 2.6. I will have a look later for more.

The only other occasion since the current scoring method was adopted in 1897 was in Rd 11 1898 when Port kicked 2.3 in the last quarter to beat Torrens by 1 point - 2.7 to 2.6

In short:
Rd 11 1898 Port (0.4) 2.7 Torrens (2.6) 2.6 Alberton
Rd 3 1909 Port (0.2) 1.4 Norwood (0.5) 0.5 Alberton
GF 1919 Sturt (0.4) 3.5 North (2.6) 2.6 Adelaide
Rd 3 2018 Eagles (0.10) 2.16 Port (2.3) 4.4 Alberton

The last time a team was goalless at 3QT:
Rd 14 2002 South (0.12) 2.15 Port (8.10) 12.14 Noarlunga

The last time a team with 10 or less points at 3QT did not lose:
Rd 13 2012 Norwood (1.4) 5.7 West (4.10) 4.12 Richmond

The last time there was a lower scoring match aggregate then 56 points:
Rd 21 2010 West 3.4 Port 2.4 Richmond (38 pts)
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=29785

The last time the home side at Alberton had a score lower than the 4.4 (28) was the 1909 match above

I've got another one, there were no goals scored during the 2nd and 3rd quarters - only the 6th time from 1897 onwards, and the only time between Rd 3 1909 and now was the 1948 1st Semi:
West 2.5 2.8 2.13 7.18 (60)
Sturt 2.4 2.5 2.8 4.9 (33)
Adelaide, 21035
