But we already know a large portion of SANFL players are getting paid, and paid quite substantially as they have been signed up to jobkeeper at $1500 per week.Umpires Association wrote:Our position has been influenced by the expectation that all community based footballers’ in South Australia, including SANFL will not receive any remuneration in 2020

Tinfoil hat time..
If SANFL players are eligible for job keeper.. and umpires (panel) are taking a significant reduction in payment.. does that mean they’re eligible too?

1. Umpiring isn’t their first job/income for most
2. They don’t pay tax on this income so they shouldn’t/wouldn’t be eligible
Are there SANFL players on it (who don’t work at the club normally) or is it a myth?

Players play footy for the comradeship etc, the umpires don't get together after the game and talk about their free kicks over a beer.
They go out there in all types of conditions and every time they blow their whistle, half the people there hate them.
They cop endless shit from drunken pigs on the outer who know f*** all about footy and have rose coloured glasses.
If you think blokes are going to choose to go and umpire for bugger all on a Saturday afternoon when they could be at home in the warmth with their family then you're going to see the ramifications of this.
By the time an umpire buys all of his attire required it takes about 4-5 rounds to recoup the costs, and that is during a normal season.

a) never read the laws of Australian Football book in their life
b) have no idea of the current years law interpretations sent down on high from AFL house
c) No idea of the different interpretations, Law exemptions and by-Laws being applied by the local league compared to the game they saw the previous night on FOX of Ch7
d) have no appreciation for how the game is being forced to become safer and that the ball must be the object for all players at all times,
e) Think the game should be umpired like it was in the 80s and 90s because footy was better then - that may be true but unfortunately the umpires are being told to umpire to the 2020 laws and interpretations
Re costs
Not to mention your association fees (some of which you get back through subsidised events but you still pay for your personal insurance and support for your relative association/club.
It's interesting they're agreeing for it for 2020 only.
AdFL going to be happy to have them at 2019 pay levels in 2021?
Having said all that I agree with the need for a pay cut don't agree with 50% maybe 25% tops.
As a member of the umpires committee up here were worried about how a cut will impact the recruitment of younger umpires as using the 50% cut as a barometer, that could tip the balance where potential umpires say, Not worth it from the level of abuse and the amount of effort and commitment required.
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

Good on 'em for coming to the party - it can't have been an easy decision, given the very important part they play in our game. but given everyone from the top down and the bottom up is doing a brilliant job in helping keep grass roots clubs afloat for this season, it was the right thing to do.

Re: COVID-19
Very generous move by the umpires and it will make a huge difference to the clubs, umpires fees are a big part of a footy club budget.
Lets remember them before and after the game and make sure they get a few benefits.

I'm not an AdFL umpire so it makes little difference to me, your comments just make it another backhanded slap in the chops to the umpiring fraternity.
