Certainly can't see it being in the 2021 fixture and I'd be surprised if the game on Chinese soil ever gets played again.

Andrew Hunter ( GM of China Strategy ) left the club early this year to join Jay Weatherill in Perth at the Twiggy Forrest funded Mindaroo Foundation ( A philanthropic not-for profit organisation https://www.minderoo.org/about/ ) so a crucial piece of the Port Adelaide / China engagement is no longer at the club. Lucky enough to speak with Andrew several times and he, in the lead up to that first game, had done over 30 trips in the 2 years prior to China to facilitate the game, a massive amount of work done by he and KT, among others. I'm currently reading his book "Port Adelaide to Shanghai".

We still have a full time employee in Shanghai, Tony Zhang, who is engaging with the Shanghai business community to maintain the relationship and corporate support.

I'm certainly watching with interest as despite the naysayers the strategy was funding itself and was set to become a major part of the clubs revenue stream going forward. We hadn't put all our eggs in that basket but fair to say we'd closely aligned ourselves with it going forward.

Interesting this...…...do many other clubs have full time employees overseas.

You kind of feel like this would just have to be a win/win situation. If you have a full time person overseas looking for sponsorship opportunities you would like their wage would be offset by the sponsorships gained. I'm presuming a full time employee of that sort would be on around $100-$150k a year.

The role would also be very tangible and performance would be extremely to manage. How much sponsorship dollars have they gained vs the expenses of their role.

Yep, pretty easy to set KPI's and measure them.

No doubt the current relationship between the two countries would be making this somewhat more difficult!

Yeah I guess that’s the risk component that there is so many external possibilities that could deem the role unviable

I guess with the roles profitability so easy to measure though you could manage the role accordingly and if it came unviable then end the relationship.

The hardest thing to measure with the strategy is the opportunity cost.

If we spend $400,000 to sign up a major sponsor that gives us $600,000, the happy clappers will say how wonderful, that investment in China made us $200,000, how good is that.

But in reality we could have walked into the head office of Coke and said the front patch on our jumper is free, it's worth $500k on average, but we'll give it to you for $300k cause we are struggling to fill it and this is easy.

So with that in mind, did the China deal make us $200k? Or cost us $100k?

(NB: The above numbers are random as is the use of Coke, but the theory remains).

Absolutely but that’s easy to manage and analyse against the opportunities that present in Oz. Like you said if it was found the income generated plus expense occurred wasn’t deemed profitable versus what local sponsorship dollars you could have received you end the experiment

It’s an interesting concept that’s for sure

Thoughts on Lachie Jones?

I don't know him from a bar of soap but my initial thought is a half back flanker is probably the last thing we need isn't it?

Half back flanker now, midfielder in the future.

I agree though, right now he's well back. I think Jonas and McKenzie are set as two of the talls, DBJ and Hartlett the two smalls and the likes of Aliir and Clurey fight for one spot with Lienert as back up and Burton and Jones fight for the other with Bonner as back up.

Would mean two of Clurey/Aliir/Lienert miss out and two of Burton/Jones/Bonner miss out. Good depth.

You've got a beauty there Booney. I thought he would have gone earlier. A few nod/nods, wink/winks with the Crows there.

But they got passed over in the National draft. Port could have nominated him on a pick and it would have been up to the Crows to match the bid or pass and let him go to Port. But Port mustn't have rated him enough.

Incorrect, Port had the opportunity to select him if they wanted when they picked ollie lord as the crows were out of picks and room on their main list.

Thought his dad said tonight Adelaide told him he was selected as a Cat B a couple of days before the draft

Don’t have to wait on a draft to be a Cat B rookie

Pretty sure they are still through the main draft but if not selected added directly onto the cat b rookie list. The crows didn’t announce they had the 2 guys until after the draft finished last night as they were still subject to other teams selecting/bidding on them in the main draft

Category B rookies

Each club is permitted to recruit up to three "Category B" rookies. Category B rookies are recruited directly rather than drafted, and represent players from non-traditional recruiting backgrounds. Players who may be recruited as Category B rookies include:

International players, who are neither Australian citizens nor residents
Players from the New South Wales scholarship program
Players from the International scholarship program
Zone selections by Sydney and Greater Western Sydney from New South Wales or the ACT
Zone selections by Brisbane Lions and Gold Coast from Queensland
Players from other sports, who have not been registered with an Australian rules football club for three years
Indigenous and multicultural players through their Next Generation Academy zones

I’ve read that as well but that is in relation to the rookie draft. They are still able to picked up in the national draft.
It’s very confusing
