They've asked that I go and re-do everything I've already done, they are refunding the extra money they've taken out as well, haven't solved the root cause though.

Haha is that cancelling the direct debit online through your portal. I did that about 4 times and it kept coming out.

Na, the root cause is the transfer of the internet account from the address that I no longer live at, for some reason it needs to be re-submitted.

They've been charging me for my new addresses internet and the old one, I've been instore, rang them and used their chat line and they were going to credit my bill but they took out even more again.

Do they direct debit your bank account? If so get your bank to place a stop on the drawings.

Is it true you have to be a bit careful with that as it can cause issues for other debits you may have or start up in the future.

The banks can stop all debts from one supplier (i.e. Telstra) but it will reject all debit from them which can be an issue if you have multiple debits from them.

Yes, any new plans etc. through Telstra you have to agree to a direct debit, what I should've done was moved my account across and got the wife to start up a new one, the shop told us one thing but then left us high and dry, I've been back to the store and they wiped their hands with it saying there is nothing they can do with it now.

Angry LM will be paying them a visit on the weekend.

I don't have one now but have in the past.

Substantial - financially not really but you do get to buy a new car you might not have ever thought of driving around in. You can get a new car at fleet prices if you go through a dealer who specialises in Novated Leases.

My basic understanding of it is that if the lease is worth say 2k a month, that comes out of your pre-tax salary, not post tax if you were 'buying' a car via a loan. It also means the 2k generally pays for everything. Petrol, tyres, rego, servicing etc. Obviously the more expensive car, the more the monthly payment is. For instance, I leased a Monaro when they came out in the early 2000's and was paying about 2600 per month. A common Commodore at the time would've been half that per month.

At the end of the lease, you also have a bubble payment. So the finance will be arranged so that at the end of 5 years, you still have to pay 40% (known as the bubble). You can then buy the car for that bubble price (100k car would be worth 40k after 5 years of leasing it) or you can trade the car and get another one and start the process all over again.

I found that you got a little trapped. Every 5 years you were in a new car, which was great, but I felt like I was extending myself a little bit too far for an asset that was depreciating, so I got out.

There are some rules around what you can and can't lease - from memory you can lease something less than 3 years old, so you don't need to go too silly if you don't want. My sister for instance leased a Lancer as she was up for a better car than she had but reigned in the spending/outlay.

Have a look at this site for some examples on what you can save.

Thank you, it seems to be the in thing here and seems to have it's perks, but as you've stated with your sister, I'd have to adhere to a tight budget.

When I weigh it up, I'd be looking at at least $1000 per month for a decent car anyway, then there's running costs, it would be more of the intricate tax parts etc. that I'd have to be more observant to.

Yeh and also, do you need a new car? If your car is worth say 10-20k now and costs hardly anything to run monthly (assuming it's not financed), you will all of a sudden put yourself out approx 12k a year for a 2 or 3k tax benefit. That's something I didn't consider and isn't mentioned in any of these sites selling the benefits.

At the time I did need a car, but now I'm running around in a 10k Mazda that is fully paid off and costs hardly anything month to month.

I think it would be wise to do your sums. Here is a good site for that.

I get an allowance, finance my own vehicle and run it. I get tax withheld from my allowance to off set any tax bill. I insure, fuel, register and finance the car with that and mid-way through year 4 of the loan upgrade. I haven't had any tax implications in 7 years of doing so.

This car I'm running to the end of the 4 year term however, Mrs Boon likes this one and it's cheap to run so we'll buy this at the end of the 4 years for $12k. Under 60,000kms, full factory service history.

Yes, I do need a new car, especially if I'm going to be visiting clients occasionally, my car is outdated and ready to be handed down to my son, she's done her job and I got a corolla a few years back as I umpired footy in the country so I wanted something cheap to run yet reliable.

My kids are older now so I don't need to worry about them spilling drinks in the back, wiping their hands on the seats or general crap that kids don't think about, I want a decent car again so choosing which option to pay for it is essential.

I have stuff all overheads now, I barely drink and I've brought everything I need for my house now, I want to at least drive in some sort of luxury and look forward to driving.

My vehicle selections are on 3 different corners of the spectrum though, I need to really think about what I want from a car and my intentions.

Shop around, if you're going to buy new shop around for the best value servicing deals ( most do 3 years free so you don't ever pay for a service ), I get free roadside if I keep going to the dealer for servicing ( no brainer when I don't get charged for it! ) and, in my view, resale value isn't as important if you set up the loan / lease right, that takes care of itself.

I do it, not really for the tax benefits but that all costs for the vehicle are covered and it makes car ownership very simple and every 5 years I get a new car.

Does anyone know if you can buff out scuff marks on sunglasses? Just bought a pair of ray bans which cost me a bit and I got pissed at golf on weekend and chucked them in the buggy console face down and now there is a scuff mark the size of a 5 cent piece right in my line of sight. Is it possible to buff it out do you know?
So you've seen everything have you?
Yep
Have you ever seen a man eat his own head?
No
Well you haven't seen everything then have you.

Do they direct debit your bank account? If so get your bank to place a stop on the drawings.

The last direct debit I had set up was in 1999 and 2000 with One-Tel my then Internet service. I picked up that they were collapsing and had been billing people in the eastern states months after they ceased providing them any service. So, I cancelled the credit card it was linked to immediately.

I've never agreed to a direct debit since, because at the time my bank advised I couldn't stop the direct debit - only the recipient could. So now I set up automatic transfers from my end that I can delete any time.

Sounds like an obvious progression then. I'd prefer to lease a car than buy it outright, as per the tax benefits we've pointed out. Does the company you work for have an agency they Novate through? That company would be best to source the car for you as they can get fleet discount. I saved 11k on my Monaro in 2002. Even though I wasn't buying a fleet of vehicles.

Find a vehicle you like, go to the novated company and ask them what they can source it for, then go to an accountant with those figures and ask if it's better to lease or buy outright.

Yes, there's plenty of people here that have them, I'm in no great rush so I can weigh my options up, tossing up between a 4WD ute, an RV or a coupé so I've got a fair bit of brainwork I have to do first anyway.

Thanks for your assistance, I wanted to get my head around a few things first before talking to anyone here.
