Re: Brownlow 23 - who wins it
Some 30+ stat days aren't as influential as 15 possession stat days.
Stats are overrated.
Just like the kicking efficiency stat the broadcasters roll out.

13 possessions, 1 mark, 1 tackle . 34 AFL pts. = 3 votes. Is next level ridiculous though MT

Exactly and the people that have since sat through the game said most of those 13 were ineffectual.another grub wrote:13 possessions, 1 mark, 1 tackle . 34 AFL pts. Is next level ridiculous though MT

Can't be surprised the umps made a poor decision???

Re: Brownlow 23 - who wins it
Its not as if its a split second 50/50 high tackle decision. These 4 blokes sit down over a lemonade after the game( I presume they look at stats sheet) and they came up with JHF ???? Did they think he was Bergman?

Re: Brownlow 23 - who wins it
Also heard a stat where 17 players who got 3 Brownlow votes didn't get a vote in the coaches award.
And 20 that got 10 coaches votes got no Brownlow votes.
There's too many wrong decision for them to justify keeping it with the umps.
PS Grub, they're not allowed to look at the stats sheet. Maybe they should?

Re: Brownlow 23 - who wins it
To a point i can understand coaches votes and umpires votes looking fairly different. Umps are not to know the inner workings of what coaches have asked players etc, Teams generally defend zonally so even looking for who was playing on who would be a tad difficult when it's not your primary role.Wedgie wrote:Also heard a stat where 17 players who got 3 Brownlow votes didn't get a vote in the coaches award.

They give votes out for the best players not the players who play their roles best.

If in the grand final Charlie Cameron is kept to 0 goals, 1 kicks, 1 handball whoever played on him has played their role best and from a coaches point of view would most definitely be one of the best players. Now the chances of an umpire giving that player a brownlow vote are literally non existent, when is the last time you saw a shut down defender get 3 brownlow votes. I don't agree getting 30 possession is the only way you can be best on ground.

Defenders are a dime a dozen!
Midfielders and forwards are what brings people to the game and they should win the Brownlow

Re: Brownlow 23 - who wins it
Great effort by Neale to win 2 Brownlows.
Would anyone have him in their top 5 current best players?
I’d struggle to get him in my top 10

Re: Brownlow 23 - who wins it
Perhaps all the opposition clubs booing JHF consistently made the umpires think he was around the footy all day & ripping up...Booney wrote:That's how good he is.tigerpie wrote:I don't begrudge Neales win but crickey there was some weird voting.
Sure you might get 40 odd possessions but be a bit lippy or question an umps decisions and that could reflect on an umpires votes.
It is a fairest and best player award after all.
The JHF getting 3 votes for a 13 possession game is bizarre.
Daicos has a 41 possession game at 85 percent efficiency and doesn't get a vote.. .weird!
If you can keep your head when all around you have lost theirs, then you probably haven't understood the seriousness of the situation.

Jon Ralph. “ I just watched every possession of Horne-Francis getting three votes for 13 touches v Geelong and it's a travesty. 13 touches. Four ineffective, two clangers, four short kicks. One scrounged kick off the ground that went a metre. Zero impact. Time to let umpires look at stats.”Booney wrote:That's how good he is.tigerpie wrote:I don't begrudge Neales win but crickey there was some weird voting.

They would need to be able to interpret the stats.Brodlach wrote:Jon Ralph. “ I just watched every possession of Horne-Francis getting three votes for 13 touches v Geelong and it's a travesty. 13 touches. Considering they have massive problems interpreting rules, I dont think that's going to help
Time to let opposition coaches vote 5-4-3-2-1 to get the 3-2-1

Coaches votes and Brownlow both had the same top 6 players but in different orders, not like they were completely off the mark.
