How does that compare to India's away series results in that same timeline?

In all seriousness what would this playing groups ‘claim to fame’ be amongst the other great sides

The Taylor era had the historic West Indies victory
The Steve Waugh side had the series win in India

Not sure the Smith/Cummins era has has had a moment in test cricket where we think they significantly overachieved.

I’m not saying they aren’t the number one side but let’s be real if it was the 90’s India would have a claim to the title given the last two home and away series. We all know if the neutral test was played in Dubai or Sri Lanka, India probably would have won.

Also don’t recall an Australian team drawing a home series against such a low ranked side in my lifetime. Iirc there was a drawn series with NZ in the mid 2000’s but don’t think that compares.

The fact is they haven’t conquered the next best team home or away in India. They haven’t conquered an average arch enemy side on their soil England. They failed and embarrassed the nation in South Africa. They have had a few slip ups at home, 2 x lost series to India and drawn series with West Indies.

Would we have considered them as bad as the current West Indies side I doubt it. The kiwis were always extremely plucky during that era and always had a couple of blokes considered in the top echelon.

I’m not saying Australia are underserved number one side, I’m saying more that this side is a very good one but not sure they really have achieved anything we wouldn’t expect from an Australian test side. No series win in England hurts their legacy and straight up puts them behind the Taylor/waugh side. The drawn West Indies series and loses to India at home also has them below those great sides mentioned.

The early 2000's side inbetween India loss and Ashes lost 2005

Border-Gavaskar Trophy (Australia in India) 2000/01 India 2-1 (3)
The Ashes (Australia in England) 2001 Australia 4-1 (5)
Australia in South Africa Test Series 2001/02 Australia 2-1 (3)
Australia v Pakistan Test Series (in Sri Lanka/United Arab Emirates) 2002/03 Australia 3-0 (3)
The Frank Worrell Trophy (Australia in West Indies) 2003 Australia 3-1 (4)
Australia in Sri Lanka Test Series 2003/04 Australia 3-0 (3)

I think its fair to say this side doesn't play outside of Australia enough.

Next test series will be our home summer vs India I think

I agree, Aus v NZ is just fresh in the mind because of this series, Craig McMillan on radio on Friday was talking about that 01/02 series, particularly the Gabba test match where NZ got so close to winning only for it to end in a draw.

And yes AE, Australia's next test series is v India next summer.

I suppose I could have summed it up like this…..

The Taylor and Waughs era both have a series they will always be remember for. Even the Ponting era will be remembered for ‘that’ Ashes series in England albeit we lost

What series is this playing group going to be remembered in history for….. if anything it will be the South African embarrassment or maybe the Windies drawn surprise……….? At present there is no great series win that we will be talking about in 20 years time.

We will talk about one of the great bowling attacks, we will talk about that amazing Steve Smith period he had, we will talk about the odd incredible innings from Head. But as a team I’m not sure we have ‘that series’

After smashing the WI in the first test they took their foot off the WI throat and took their minds off the job. I honestly think it was more the Australian lackluster effort and they thought they just had to turn up to win.

I remember them for being the side to go back to Pakistan to play and win when no one else had. Sure security levels of a US president followed them but they won the series and from most reports did a good job representing Australia to Pakistani people and embracing the local culture when possible.

Interesting stat from Cricinfo is that there were 13 bowlers in the match who got a wicket, the equal most in Test history.
NZ: Henry, O'Rourke, Kuggeleijn, Ravindra in the 1st, then two others in the 2nd being Southee and Phillips
Aust: Starc, Hazlewood, Cummins, Marsh, Lyon in the 1st, then two others in the 2nd being Head and Green
