In fact I have seen, on Previous occasions ,an umpire line up behind the player taking the kick to ensure he doesn't deviate off the line. The video quite clearly sees Hose take 2 steps to improve his angle.
The point that Summerton ( the player on the mark and I know this because i spoke to him post-game) makes to the umpire after the kick is.. that while Hose was taking the kick ..the umpire called "Play on!"...wtaf!!!
He doesn’t improve his angle, he was behind the direct line and never crossed it.
The grey area seems to be if a player is outside the boundary and then comes in on an angle. I’ve seen that officiated differently in the past, when sometimes it’s OK and other times not. That obviously didn’t happen here.
The across the body kick for goal is nearly the norm now, so probably not being officiated differently, it’s just that in the past it hardly ever happened. Old bastards like us have muscle memory and think of how to officiate it along the lines of a direct line shot for goal.
That said, there may be some leniency now in marginal cases.
In any case, it goes down in the book as a goal … I think correctly, you not. That’s OK, we can agree to disagree.
