Might have to revert her to operating on a fully cash basis from now on. #-o :D
I gots to know ... how did she fall for this?
It’s a great question, and I have hinted in previous posts, not the first time she has ‘interacted’ with scammers.

I have spent countless hours over the years ‘educating’ her and providing awareness of online risks, but she for some reason still falls for stuff. The worst bit is that she gets really confused and can’t explain what she’s done, which makes it nigh impossible to help her.

She rang me after it happened, wondering if something was wrong, so she has some awareness, but it’s like Adrenalin kicks in and overrides any rational thought while it’s happening.

Will discuss with the missus on what we should do from here. My strong inclination is to suggest that we ‘ban’ her from online trading, but that’s easier said than done.
You mentioned she uses a debit card for online purchases, can you manage it so there isn't a lot of $'s on there at any one time? Therefore reducing the possible loss to a few hundred $'s?

My Dad, despite being a retired Bank Manager, still has the odd slip up, he was expecting a delivery last month and got the Australia Post scam email asking him to pay another $2.99 by clicking on a link to get the parcel, which he did

Yeah, it’s one of the things I talked to her about yesterday …need to review her accounts and come up with a better way to restructure.

If it was on a credit, not debit card, then I assume the transaction could have been stopped, but using a credit card could introduce further problems.

One of the many really worrying things is that when I initially asked whether it was a debit or credit card, she kept saying it’s a credit card because it's Visa, so she didn't even know it was a debit card with access to all her funds. I had to explain to her that Visa and Mastercard just facilitate the transactions, so the card can be either a debit or credit card … she just assumed it was a credit card because it was ‘Visa’.

We’re leaning to a ‘ban’ on online transactions for her. My wife said later that her Mum was anxious about the ticket process before hand (she was over our place the night before) and asked my wife to help her but she was working. My wife didn’t tell me this beforehand though, so while I was aware her Mum was going to try to get a ticket, I didn’t know she was anxious and worried about doing it.

I could have easily helped her if asked, but it was unfortunately too late when her Mum called me.

… and you guessed it, both her sons have worked in banks for most of their careers

My wife works at ANZ and for all online shopping she uses a debit card that is solely for that purpose, just moves funds over when she uses it.

Always use a credit card- best protection you have
The responsibility is on them for scams or shoddy products
All you have to do is dispute a charge within 90 days

Yeah, get it … but the problem is that the MIL gets ‘white line fever’ online, so she would need to be disciplined to mange the accounts … when yesterday she authorised a $459 payment to a random site for a $75 AFL finals ticket and thought nothing of it until afterwards #-o

As a follow up, apparently police want to question the person in question and have publicly called for him to hand himself in.

What he did was absolutely abhorrent, but I’d be surprised if he broke any Laws. Freedom of speech is one of the things that defines our identity as a country, so I’m not sure what the charge would be if that is what police are aiming for.

Agree on both fronts.
The guy clearly did it to antagonise, but it's not illegal.

The initial response from the police to want to go after this guy, who has shown support for the man that killed one of their colleagues, is somewhat understandable, but equally, the police need to remain impartial and professional.
Just cause he's annoyed you, doesn't mean you get to go after this clown.

If anything, the overreach by the police to go after this dipsh!t will only fuel the sovereign citizens even more.

What is a sovereign citizen? From what I can gather, it is someone who believes their birth rite is to have access and ability to own or occupy every natural resource on the land?

The sovereign citizen movement is a loose group of anti-government activists, conspiracy theorists, vexatious litigants, tax protesters and financial scammers found mainly in English-speaking common law countries—the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.

Sovereign citizens have a pseudo-legal belief system based on misinterpretations of common law, and claim not to be subject to any government statutes unless they consent to them.

They believe that by simply declaring themselves as a sovereign citizen ( which is an oxymoron ) they are no longer held to the laws of the land as the rest of us are. It's a simple misunderstanding of common law. They're idiots.

If you are a sovereign you can't be a citizen and if you are a citizen you are not a sovereign.
If you want to go quickly, go alone.

If you want to go far, go together.

Has now been arrested.
A man photographed and filmed holding up an “offensive” and “disgraceful” Dezi Freeman poster at a March for Australia rally in Adelaide has been arrested.

South Australian Police announced the arrest on Tuesday, saying a 39-year-old Golden Grove man had attended the Grenfell Street police station in the CBD.

“After being interviewed, he was charged with displaying offensive material in a public place,” the police said.

The poster reads “free man” beneath an image of alleged cop killer Dezi Freeman.

Such a loose charge. "Offensive material".

Before long we'll have Port fans saying people walking around the city on Thursday in a crows scarf is offensive. Arrest them!
