Well if you add Staritski to the mix, there's a fair bit of AFL representation in those two sides isn't there.

I know it wasn't the question, but obviously G Smith played VFL before he came over, as did Des O'Dwyer and his epic eight-game career at the Demons.

Never knew this game even existed until read this thread. How many went?

Looking at the photo earlier in the thread - stuff all.

Ahhh Des O'Dwyer, forgot he'd played at Melbourne.

And of course Greg Smith had an interesting time at Sydney....

Smithy has interesting times wherever he is...

I recall looking for Dad after under 15's development training on a Friday night at Elizabeth Oval. At the time Smithy was league captain at Centrals, but out injured. I went to the bar and found them holding it up quite well. This would have been at about 7:00pm, I was pretty hungry and ready to head off.

We left at 11:00pm, after I had been told of his time at Collingwood and Sydney and everything else he had done with footy. He and Dad 'poured' themselves out of the bar and into their cars. In hindsight it was fascinating and started a mateship between us that is still alive today. At the time I would have smacked him in the head for a pizza.

err, yes.
The five years at South Melbourne / Sydney and then down to Collingwood for two, presumably when got tired of the plane flights up north, and the demand to live in the town.

And did Staritski actually go to North?

Staritski definitely played AFL, may have even been 2 clubs. Robin McKinnon i think didn't play any AFL.

Ah yeah, wrong McKinnon, too early for Marty.

Think Staritski went from North Melb to Collingwood; didn't play much at either club from memory.

I remember going to the game, probably only 6 or 7 k there by memory which was poor in those days, I remember the game had no atmosphere, a few people gave a cheer for city early on but then country got on top and it was pretty quiet.
Just a day out really.

Robin McKinnon (West Adelaide/South Gambier) played VFL for Melbourne.
He's still my hero even if he is a little bit crap.

IIRC from the footy times it got over 10K in attendance but I don't think it was that hard to get free tickets as The News and The Advertiser were pumping it* pretty hard publicity wise
Let that be a lesson to you Port, no one beats the Bays five times in a row in a GF and gets away with it!!!

I think Schwartz may possibly have been drafted (or traded to) by the Crows as well, but didn't play a game there either.

Pooraka nearly got Greg Smith to play for them in the mid-90s, didn't they Bulldogs. I'm assuming it was the Harrington connection that nearly got him there.

He coached Salisbury in '93. Poor bloke at the bottom of every pack, came out looking to give a handball and finished up smashed into the ground because no one ran past him - the story of his season.

Pretty sure Robbie McKinnon never ventured over the border. In fact almost 100% sure.
Mind you reckon he would have been perfect for VFL/AFL footy in mid to late 80's.
Played with him in 1997 & 1998 at PHOS Camden - one of the fittest blokes I have come across.
Have heard a rumour he may be making a come back to play for Encounter Bay in the GSFL in '08 at the ripe old age of 42 - reckon he would still go alright though!!!
