There was a Graham Linke who played at Woodville in the mid 70s, recruited from Footscray. At the same time, there was a Geoff Linke playing for South Adelaide at FF, and he ended up at St.Kilda but didn't do much there.

South also had a Trevor Linke around the same time, but I don't know much about him.

I might be getting confused (happens a lot) with my players, what about Trevor Pierson, did he play anywhere other than Woodville?

Yes, he began at West Adelaide. Limited by the emergence of Roger Luders and ended up at Woodville.

Yes, the Popplestone one is interesting. Why did he leave Sturt for the Eagles?

Didn't Schace go at the same time ... Unimpressed with Sturt's treatment of Merv Keane I'd always thought?

Richards brother Matthew I reckon .. Could have been anything this kid, but couldn't stop breaking his leg :([/quote]

Yeah, Matthew Kelly was on the Crows original list, played a couple of games, can't remember whether they were pre-season or H&A. Certainly a lot of potential there. Pretty sure Matthew James was on the list too.

I seriously doubt Matthew James was on an AFL list.

He also had a spell at Encounter Bay before coaching Pulteney. Now lives in Melbourne I think

One transfer that interested me in the 1970s was Tony Lloyd in 1972. He was named in the West Torrens quad, and is in the West Torrens team list in the Football Budget in round 1, next thing I knew he was playing for Sturt. Does anyone know the circumstances?

Other transfers in the 70s include:
Graham Reed: Central District to Sturt
Ian Jackman: South Adelaide to West Torrens
Bob Kingston: Norwood to Port Adelaide
Kevin Beswick & Ray Hayes: Port Adelaide to West Adelaide
Bob Tregenza & Craig Marriott: Glenelg to West Torrens
Peter Anderson: North Adelaifde to Glenelg to Woodville
Wayne Carty: Woodville to South Adelaide
Max Parker: Woodville to North Adelaide
Trevor Hughes: North Adelaide to West Adelaide (1960s)
Malcolm Greenslade: Sturt to Glenelg
Kevin McSporran: West Torrens to Woodville
Peter Yeo: Port Adelaide to Sturt
Bruce Stevenson: West Adelaide to Central District
Geoff Baynes: West Torrens to South Adelaide to Woodville
Trevor Grimwood: Norwood to Port Adelaide to West Adelaide

Then threre was the swap between North Adelaide and Glenelg with John Sandland and Adrian Rebbeck.

Darryl Smith too i think. I think Smith may actually have been sacked (along with Keane).

Adelaide Hawk wrote:Also as discussed, Mike Nunan took leave from Sturt for a season to undertake busiess studies overseas, only to be told by Jack Oatey there was no spot for him to return. Norwood offered him a position.

I was told that whilst Nunan was away, Jim Derrington had consolidated his spot in the side and that Nunan would have to try and dislodge him from his spot.

So I think that Oatey did want Nunan, but that his replacement had done very well and there would be no easy ride for him at the selection table.

This story of course could be wrong but it's what I've heard from a few sturt relatives before.

That's correct.
Darryl Smith was basically the players rep and wasn't overly happy with the treatment of Merv Keane.
The players loved him (Keane) and Smith had numbers on his side.
After the events of Keane getting sacked, Smith, Popplestone and Schache went to Torrens.
A host of others retired, got drafted and went to other clubs.
The rest as they say is history.

That was a little earlier (1974), but yes, very much the same thing. West Adelaide for some reason decided both players were not required and Norwood pounced. They were terrific players for Norwood.

Pope and the new coach, Fos Williams, did not see eye to eye I believe, hence the move. I can't recall if the same applied to Greg Nicholson but it was very disappointing to lose him. I think we recruited him from Frankston, it was definitely a VFA club, and he roved with us before Norwood, IIRC, turned him into an outstanding back pocket.

So Nick, Nicho was already a decent player at Westies, and Im gathering Pope had already established a quality career with the Bloods before his move? (I only ask because it was before my time .. But my guess had always been Popey had played the bulk of his career elsewhere before the Legs, but Nicho seemed to have quite a few years with us)

Rod Pope had played 209 games for West Adelaide, and a further 10 for South Australia before coming to Norwood. He had won Westies' B&F twice (1964, 1968) and had been vice captain of the club. He was a star, and he had plenty left when he got to Norwood.

He added a further 95 games for the Legs, won our B&F in 1976 and played in our 1975 premiership team.

Greg Nicholson played 57 games for West before the transfer to Norwood. He had come under my notice with two very high quality games against us, and I was very surprised to see he wasn't required by the Bloods.

At Norwood he played a further 157 games and 1 for South Australia, as well as playing in our 1975 and 1978 premiership teams.

A certain Port Adelaide journalist wrote a book on the Williams Dynasty and got himself into some very hot water for false allegations against Nicholson whilst he was at West. Nicholson is a richer man for the experience. :)

Surely it hasn't gone this far without being mentioned....

Damian Squire - North to Sturt.

Did I miss it in a previous post?

If not i assumed it had something to do with a fall out with McDermott.

Nathon Irvin.

Sure that his previous club probably didn't lose sleep over him going but thought he played some awesome footy for us during a crucial 2 year period.

Remember during '98 GF him copping a huge blindside hit when he only had eyes for ball.

Thanks AH, it still hurts to see how much footy Nicholson played with you guys. He'd actually won our Best First Year Player Award in 1971, and then won our B&F in 1972.
Gavin Wheaton was another one we lost very early to Norwood. He had an outstanding start to his career with us, playing in the centre. But not long afterwards (1976 I think) he transferred to Norwood (I have an inkling that may have been another falling out with Fos) but I don't think he lasted all that long there.
