A calamity of epic proportions has been carried out at Northam with the wrong horse contesting and winning race two before all-clear was posted by officials.

Western Australian stewards have opened a full investigation after an accidental ring-in wasn't discovered until after correct weight was declared after a race at Northam on Thursday.

Ascot trainer Paul Jordan headed to the meeting with two horses, brown gelding El Alamein to contest a 1000m Maiden Plate and bay gelding Urquharts Bluff which was to run in the Class 1 Handicap (1400m).

Urquharts Bluff was unintentionally saddled and ran in the maiden rather than his stablemate, winning the race before stewards declared correct weight prior to the error being identified.
